Making Headlines: FMSP Hosts Surface Mining Emergency Response Training

WCTV, the CBS-affiliated television station covering North Florida, did a story on the Third Annual Surface Mining Emergency Response Training and Competition. A reporter interviewed emergency response team members and mining professionals during the field exercise portion of the competition. This coverage provides important insight into the mining industry.

National Mine Rescue Contest Hall of Fame Inductee Joseph A. Olivier

Joseph A. Olivier began his mine rescue career in 1974 as a team captain. In 1988, he joined the National Mine Rescue Team. As a National Team member and captain, Joe participated in two regional mine rescue competitions, as well as one international competition.

Today, Joe serves as the contest director for the Southern Regional Mine Rescue Contest. Joe is passionate about the mine rescue community, and developed the quote that can be found on the Third Annual Surface Mining Emergency Response Training and Competition T-shirts, safety buttons and stickers. The quote reads, "WE ARE MINE RESCUE PEOPLE, WE KEEP HOPE ALIVE."

Passing of a True Certified Mine Safety Professional and Safety Pioneer

Certified Safety Pioneer H.L. Boling passed away on Sunday, March 1, following a lengthy and courageous battle with leukemia, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and neurological disorders.

For more than 40 years, H.L. was one of the most influential mining safety professionals in the U.S., and his impact extended to many other countries. He was a true friend, mentor and servant leader to countless people and organizations.

Rest in peace, H.L.

WHO WE ARE

The Florida Mine Safety Program (FMSP) aims to educate those who partake in mining operations by assisting mining companies and mining contractors with their health and safety training. For more than 30 years, the program has operated as a federally-funded grant program under the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), whose mission is to prevent death, disease and injuries in the mining industry. This is done through a variety of training courses, conferences and informational seminars offered by FMSP. These courses highlight proper emergency evacuation plans, health and safety standards and more. FMSP diligently works to ensure that miners working in both Florida metal and nonmetal operations are aware of the health and safety standards and are effectively trained to take precautionary measures. Through a collaborative effort, FMSP and MSHA Educational Field and Small Mine Services (EFSMS) work together to reduce the frequency and severity of mining accidents and ensure a safe environment for all.
