Greetings, Nevada County! You will notice a theme running through my first newsletter of 2024 – public engagement. In December, I urged you to get involved in your community by volunteering your time. This month, I want to build on that by highlighting some opportunities for you to get involved. Let’s make 2024 a year of positivity, compassion, and engagement.

Penn Valley Town Hall Scheduled for January 25 from 6-8PM

Come join me on Thursday, January 25 from 6 to 8 PM at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church on Penn Valley Drive in Penn Valley for a town hall event hosted by the Penn Valley Area Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber will be serving light refreshments and will have speakers addressing the following topics and updates:

Volunteerism
Update on District 4
Penn Valley Union Elementary School District updates
Western Gateway Park
Economic development
Building/Permitting process
Penn Valley and Rough and Ready Fire District
California Fair Plan and insurance
Open Q&A and discussion from you

There will be some great discussions at this event, and I look forward to seeing you there.

Save the Date: Special Supervisors Meeting Scheduled for Idaho Maryland Mine Project on 2/15

The Nevada County Board of Supervisors has scheduled a Special Meeting on February 15 to hold a noticed public hearing and take final action on the proposed Idaho Maryland Mine – Rise Grass Valley Project. The meeting may continue to February 16 if needed. This Special Board Meeting follows the May 10-11, 2023, Planning Commission Public Hearing, where the Commission recommended that Supervisors deny the project and the Final Environmental Impact Report. At this upcoming meeting, the Board of Supervisors will hear presentations from staff and the applicant as well as take public comment. The Board is expected to ask questions of the staff and the applicant before entering deliberations on whether to approve or deny the application to reopen the Idaho Maryland Mine – Rise Grass Valley. Public Health Mobile Unit Ribbon Cutting

Nevada County Public Health is Hitting the Open Road

Nevada County Public Health Department (NCPHD) is taking its immunizations and other services on the road in a new Mobile Health Unit. The Board of Supervisors met for a ribbon cutting and toured the Mobile Health Unit on January 9 at the Eric Rood Administration Center. The public was encouraged to access our free Public Health services during the event, including flu shots, oral health kits, COVID-19 at-home test kits, and distribution of naloxone, the opioid overdose reversal medication.

“We have areas in our community where access to health care can be difficult. Our goal is to make immunizations and other Public Health services more accessible to our community. By utilizing our Mobile Health Services Unit, we will be able to reach clients in rural areas of our county like North San Juan and the town of Washington. We also plan to take the mobile unit to Grass Valley, Nevada City, Penn Valley, and Truckee to provide flu shots and other health services to remove barriers to accessing these services” said Kathy Cahill, Public Health Director.

Let’s Be Ready for Winter

Have you thought through your Winter Preparedness Plan? What steps do you need to take to make sure that you and your loved ones will be safe and warm in the event of a storm? For example, charging your vehicle or getting to the gas station in a storm may be impossible. Stock up now on fuel levels for your vehicle, generator, or tools!

Help Create a More Wildfire Resilient Community

The Nevada County Office of Emergency Services is developing a Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) and wants to hear from you. The Community Risk Reduction Workshops are the second set of community workshops to support the CWPP update. Join an in-person or a virtual community workshop in January and February 2024! It is Almost Time for the Countywide CodeRED Test!

Nevada County uses CodeRED for emergency alerts. Ready Nevada County will hold a countywide CodeRED emergency alert test on Wednesday January 31, 2024. Be prepared by registering now for CodeRED emergency alerts at ReadyNevadaCounty.org/EmergencyAlerts
