March 2024

Greetings, District 4!

With the multiple storms in February and March that brought wind, rain, and winter weather to our communities and left many without power, I wanted to reflect on the many positive stories you shared with me about our community coming together to assist those in need. I also want to say a hearty “thank you!” to Ready Nevada County staff for their great work throughout the county in response to the storm events.

Spring officially begins today. It is lovely to see the daffodils in bloom. Check out the Event section below for a list of upcoming family-friendly events to take advantage of all springtime has to offer in our community.

Time to Start Thinking About Vegetation Management

With spring right around the corner, it is time to start thinking about how we can all do our part to keep preparedness a priority. Whether you are cleaning up from the recent storms, weekend gardening, or simply working to create defensible space, check out the three easy ways to dispose or your green waste year-round:

  1. Order Residential Curbside Pick Up: Order Waste Management’s 64 or 96-gallon residential curbside green waste bin for regular pick-up, (800) 637-8648.
  2. Drop Off Green Waste: McCourtney Road Transfer Station, Wednesday – Sunday, 8:00 am-3:30 pm. 14741 Wolf Mountain Rd, Grass Valley, CA. Standard disposal rates apply.
  3. Rent a Green Waste Dumpster: Rent a 20, 30, or 40-yard green waste dumpster on your own, or split the cost with neighbors. To reserve a dumpster, call Waste Management at (866) 844-1508.

Supervisors Advocate to Save AT&T Landline Phone Service

At our February 27 meeting, the Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to send a letter to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) urging it to deny AT&T’s request to discontinue copper-based landlines. AT&T wants to upgrade to wireless or fiber technology, but Supervisors fear that could leave thousands in Nevada County without any phone service at all. Since AT&T’s plans were announced last summer, approximately 90 residents have contacted County officials asking to keep landline service. If the CPUC approves AT&T’s request, AT&T could cancel landline service to customers within six months of that decision.

As I said about this issue: AT&T says they commit to our landline customers and that they will not be left without service during the transition period to newer technologies. It will be years in the future that customers in our rural Nevada County will have access to these new technologies, and there is no assurance to being served in the future, including after a natural disaster that damages communications equipment and infrastructure. This could result in life-and-death situations.

The Board of Supervisors encourages the public to make comments about the issue directly to the CPUC. The final comment opportunity will occur March 19, 2024 at 2pm and 6pm.

Remote Access Options for The March 19 Virtual Public Forums at 2pm and 6pm:

  • Live video broadcast with English or Spanish captions via webcast: www.adminmonitor.com/ca/cpuc
  • Phone: 1-800-857-1917, passcode: 6032788#

The public can also make their voice heard in the proceedings and read the comments of others on the CPUC’s website.

Visit the Nevada County News Flash for direct links to the CPUC.
