Teamwork, Personality and Character Traits in The Founding Fathers: Understanding America’s Origins With Insights for Today

The Founding Fathers established a nation rooted in liberty, law, and self-governance. Despite regional, economic, philosophical and personality differences, they prioritized a shared purpose and exhibited tremendous teamwork and follow through- lessons which can guide us with leadership to transform and transcend divisive times today.

Yet, these men were human and some were paradoxical from ideology to lived experience. Many were enslavers who benefited directly from an institution which was at odds with their vision of liberty. Through our lens nearly 250 years later, women, Native Americans, African Americans and many others were absent in the democracy they helped design. Their work was visionary—but incomplete—as we see more clearly today when economic difference stands as a divide among people from all races, creeds, colors, geographies and religions. Now, we have an opportunity to take the tremendous strengths of the Founding Fathers to architect a future on their shoulders with all who are invited, treasured and valued at the table. This democratic society that works for all can feature housing, education, good jobs, robust mental health and healthcare, service to others, economic mobility and financial freedom as pillars of our next 250 and beyond.

Key Teamwork Qualities of Our Founding Fathers:

  • They placed the goal of independence above individual ambition, believing that unity was essential to national survival.
  • Fierce ideological disagreements did not fracture their alliance. Instead, debate helped refine foundational ideas and resulted in documents like the Constitution.
  • Many chose service over personal recognition. Washington, for example, declined power and set lasting democratic precedents.
  • They brought different talents—writing, diplomacy, finance, legal theory—and respected what each contributed to the cause.
  • Signing the Declaration was an act of treason against the Crown. They acted courageously despite real personal and political risk.
  • They revised drafts, learned from failure, and changed course when needed. Franklin and Washington both evolved significantly over time as did they all.

Though they never took personality assessments, historians and psychologists have speculated on their likely types based on behavior and writings:

  • Thomas Jefferson – INFJ: Idealistic, visionary, and deeply introspective. Advocated for education and liberty.
  • Benjamin Franklin – ENTP: Curious, inventive, and diplomatic. Enjoyed challenging conventions and sparking innovation.
  • Alexander Hamilton ENTJ: Strategic, ambitious, and bold. Helped establish the U.S. financial system and shaped federal power.
  • George Washington – ISTJ: Reliable, principled, and duty-driven. Led with moral clarity and quiet strength.
  • James Madison – INTP: Analytical, intellectual, and systems-oriented. Architect of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
  • John Adams  ISTJ: Pragmatic and principled. Valued law, order, and civic responsibility.

The leadership, teamwork and personality traits of our Founding Fathers provide insight into the a range of human capacity and contribution, and point a way forward for all of us today to lead through difference as we create a nation even more stellar and more strong than ever because we stand for all people from all backgrounds in ways that unify, uplift and inspire. What better way to pay tribute to our Founders than to create this reality for the next 250 years and beyond? Below are profiles from the last several days of the some of the most significant Founding Fathers.
