Hello to you! Welcome to this week's edition of CDP Connect! This week, we're talking about creating mission-aligned work teams. From the very beginning of a nonprofit's existence, the work is done in teams. Nonprofits have boards, volunteers, administrators, and worker bees -- many people with complementary skill sets to get the mission accomplished. It takes a village and that village must be aligned to be effective.

This week, the spotlight is on the David and Lucille Packard Foundation. The Packard Foundation works with people and communities to create solutions for just societies and a healthy, resilient natural world. They work through three interdependent priorities:

  • Build just societies. Supporting a strong civil society, inclusive institutions, and governance to build just and equitable societies for all people.
  •  Protect and restore our natural world. Championing bold climate solutions, ocean health, and scientific innovation to secure the health and future of people and planet
  • Invest in families and communities. Prioritizing children's healthy development and promoting resilient communities where children and families thrive and have the power to shape their lives.

The Foundation contributed more than $200K over a three-year period to support team-building efforts in nonprofits. If you work in one of their priority areas, explore how you can tap into their support. Visit https://www.packard.org/

Team-building: The path to an effective "we"

Nonprofits are teams. They are made up of people aligned around a mission to make a difference in the world. But strong teams do not happen by accident. They happen when intention meets practice. Effective teambuilding strengthens a nonprofit’s ability to achieve its mission. When board members, staff, volunteers, and community partners work together, they bring diverse perspectives, skills, and experiences to shared goals.

Teambuilding activities foster trust, improve communication, encourage collaboration, and help individuals appreciate one another’s contributions. These connections are especially important when addressing complex community challenges that require collective action. By creating opportunities to build relationships, solve problems, and celebrate successes, nonprofits can develop stronger teams and more effective partnerships.

First, gather the team. Bring together volunteers, beneficiaries, staff, and board members. Make several teams if that suits you best. Then:

1. Tackle a Community Challenge – Work together to identify a community need and develop a creative solution. It can be mission-related or not. The focus is to create an opportunity to connect, problem-solve, and hear everyone's voice.

2. Strengths and Skills Mapping – Have participants share their unique strengths, skills, and experiences to explore how they complement one another.

3. Collaborative Problem-Solving – Present a current organizational challenge and brainstorm solutions, prioritize ideas, and develop an action plan. Instead of dividing into work roles to address a challenge, invite the whole team to explore solutions. Or solve a murder-mystery puzzle together or visit an escape room. The idea is to bring together collective brainpower to problem-solve.

4. Scavenger Hunt – Create a series of tasks that require team members to ask questions of other staff, find an obscure policy in an employee manual, go to locations in the community to find something, discover shared resources offered in the community, or identify opportunities for collaboration. Get creative. The point is to create a shared experience.

5. Fun Experience – Go to a ballgame, theatrical production, festival, concert, arcade, or unique dining experience. Find ways to build a fun shared experience for the team.

Investing in team building builds the foundation for greater organizational impact and stronger, healthier communities. What's the next step in strengthening your team? Need help? Reach out. We are here to help.

Mission Alignment: Working Together to Accomplish More

A shared mission provides the foundation for effective teamwork. Teams are most successful when everyone understands the mission, believes in its purpose, and recognizes their role in achieving it.

Mission alignment requires more than agreeing with a mission statement. It means connecting daily decisions, individual responsibilities, and organizational priorities to a common purpose. When team members understand how their contributions support the bigger picture, they can work together more effectively, communicate openly, and focus their energy on shared goals.

Strong teams recognize that accomplishing a mission is a collective effort. Each person brings unique strengths, perspectives, and resources to the table. By building trust, respecting differences, sharing information, and coordinating their efforts, teams can overcome challenges and achieve greater impact than they could individually.

Regularly revisiting the mission helps teams stay focused, resolve competing priorities, and measure progress. When everyone is moving in the same direction, individual efforts become collective achievements—and the mission becomes more than words on paper. It becomes the purpose that unites people and drives meaningful change. As you get started with more intentional mission alignment, keep these three principles in mind:

  1. Everyone is on the same team. Individuals have different roles but share a common purpose in meeting the mission.
  2. Differences can create tension and need to be managed, but differences ultimately strengthening the work.
  3. Leadership is key. Leaders must prioritize team alignment through cooperation, collaboration, and consistency. Disruptors must be confronted. Grumblers must be corrected. Strong leaders make or break teams.

Alignment around mission provides ample opportunity for achieving great things. If you need help, reach out.  You aren't in this work alone.
