Are you addicted to technology? Not just in the "I can't lift my eyes from the screen" way, but in the "I must have the latest and greatest version of every tech gadget available" way?
My son-in-law is like that. Every time a new cell phone is introduced; off he goes to upgrade. Me? I couldn't understand why anyone would want a cell phone in the first place and waited until they were about five years old before I even got one.
Now, of course, I live off my cell phone, just like everyone else.
It's pretty astounding, really, what a cell phone can do. It's a computer that fits in the palm of your hand! Wow, technology improvements move so fast.
So while the upside of this technology age is that we can do more, faster, and with ever increasing accuracy, the downside is obsolescence and the speed at which our technology out-ages.
For example, if you're one of the people who finally upgraded to a 4K television, did you know there are now 8K versions available?
Remember when 1080p was High Definition (HD) and how amazed we were with the resolution? Then along came 4K UHD (Ultra High Definition) and suddenly 1080p looked like the 8mm reel we watched movies on in high school!
--Geez, I just dated myself! Shall we also speak of mimeograph? Mmmm, loved the smell of mimeograph ink! Ah but I digress --
You may not have given any thought to this, but having a high resolution TV is one thing. Having high resolution content is another.
It took years for 4K televisions to have enough content to make the TV worth the cost. And, as you know, technology drops in price with each new advance so a 4K television is fairly inexpensive (or the norm) these days and there is plenty of 4K content to watch.
So just when we got used to 4K along comes 8K which is four times the resolution of 4K but is so new it doesn't have a high definition acronym (will it be Super Duper High Definition?)
If the resolution trend to bring us more and more pixels continues, pretty soon we'll be able to pull real, live action into our living room (beam me up Scotty?)
Here's the thing about 8K though --
A. they are Super Duper expensive (oooh maybe it's acronym should be SDHD!). I think Samsung's 65 inch retails somewhere in the $5,000 range and if you want to go to 96" you'll pay a sweet $70,000!!!
By comparison, a 70" 4K UHD TV runs about $1000 at Costco, which is a good place to buy one because until you see a 1080p next to a 4K you don't quite 'get' how much better the resolution truly is (4K is worth it...)
And B. there is literally no 8K content available, at least not in this country anyway. Since 8K requires newer peripherals (ie. It takes a different HDMI cable because the 8K processes more data faster) and because it will likely require some advances in production technology, the great movie makers in the sky probably won't offer 8K compatible content for several years.
Therefore, unless you just want to throw some money away, your 4K TV won't go obsolete for many years to come -- let's all breathe a collective sigh of relief!
There is one other downside to this technology age and that is the complexity of these newer and more advanced-functionality gadgets.
It can be pretty intimidating to set up a new computer or a new smart phone or your iPad. OR, what about the new video doorbells, home lighting, video walls and multi-room audio?
What about WiFi thermostats, remote pool control apps, whole house smart systems? Do you even know the difference between a router and a modem?
Heck, I consider myself to be above average tech savvy and even I had trouble getting a simple network extender to stay connected.
