Encryption's Increasing Importance
MIT released a study back in December that showed that in the last decade alone, the amount of data breaches occurring had more than tripled. That study was based upon numbers from 2022 and the numbers from 2023 had already indicated the trend was getting worse. So what can be done in such a situation?
Encryption of Emails
While there are many solutions, one answer is to begin using more encryption - a process that can render data unusable by a bad actor that intercepts it. One of the more common areas to implement this is email. By encrypting an email, it makes it so the other party receiving the email must prove they have access to the account receiving so that they can read the email. It's commonly used for more sensitive data that can't be transmitted any other way.
Often, this sort of setup only requires upgraded licensing and an hour or so of setup.
Encryption of Devices
A less common method outside of industries like finance or medical care, this involves encrypting the drive for an entire device. Essentially, it would require a long, complex key to unlock access to any data on the drive if any changes that are unusual on the device occur.
This can be a bit more difficult to setup and manage, but certain software can enable it to be a very easy implementation. One example of this is Sophos Intercept X. With a simple add-on functionality, it can add the ability to automatically encrypt the devices it protects and allow the central management of the complex codes through your IT support.
