How Was Your International System Administrator Day?

You may not have been aware, but we at Ridge Support certainly hope you were - last Friday, July 26, was International System Administrator Day. Ideally it made your day just that much better.

What Is This Holiday?

Well, 2019 marked the 20th recurrence of the event that is designed to show appreciation to those who go by many names, the most common of which tend to be IT support, techies, or IT pros. Some even call them real-life superheroes.

While Ridge Support assists with many businesses IT needs, there are certainly those within each organization and sometimes even within our own homes that serve similar capacities. This holiday is meant to recognize these individuals and what they do for us. Maybe you could consider celebrating this on a different day if you missed the formal date for the holiday.

What Do They Do

A system administrator covers so many different areas that it is impossible to list them all here, but a short list could include:
  • Setting up new workstations or servers for use
  • Monitoring security threats and handling things like malware or viruses
  • Creating and managing backups of data in case of disaster
  • Implementing security measures to ensure data safety
  • Establishing user accounts to enable usage of programs like Microsoft Office or email
The list could go on, but it would probably be easier just to ask your system administrator what they do while you are appreciating them! Happy Belated System Administrator Day!

As part of our celebration of the holiday, we will share with you one of the President of Ridge Support's favorite jokes:

On Monday, a duck walked up to a lemonade stand and he said to the man running the stand,
"Hey! Got any grapes?"
The man said, "No we just sell lemonade. But it's cold and it's fresh and it's all home-made. Can I get you a glass?"
The duck said, "I'll pass."
Then he waddled away.
On Tuesday, when the duck walked up to the lemonade stand, he said to the man running the stand,
"Hey! Got any grapes?"
The man said, "Look, this is getting old. I mean, lemonade's all we've ever sold. Why not give it a go?"
The duck said, "How 'bout, no."
Then he waddled away.
On Wednesday, when the duck walked up to the lemonade stand, he said to the man running the stand,
"Hey! Got any grapes?"
The man said, "THAT'S IT! If you don't stay away, duck, I'll glue you to a tree and leave you there all day, stuck, so don't get too close!"
The duck said, "Adios."
Then he waddled away.
On Thursday, when the duck walked up to the lemonade stand, he said to the man running the stand,
"Hey, got any glue?"
"What?"
"Got any glue?"
"No, why would I– oh!"
"And one more question for you; Got any grapes?"
And the man just stopped. Then he started to smile. He started to laugh. He laughed for a while. He said,
"Come on duck, let's walk to the store. I'll buy you some grapes so you won't have to ask anymore."
So they walked to the store and the man bought some grapes.
He gave one to the duck and the duck said,
"Hmmm.. No thanks. But you know what sounds good? It would make my day. Do you think this store has any lemonade?"
Then he waddled away.
