System Files: Microsoft Fix Includes A Newly Created Folder

One type of security concern all users face is a zero-day vulnerability. They leave program vendors and end users scrambling to fix issues. Such is the case in Windows, where a recent vulnerability was found that could allow for a VPN provision to bypass Defender on PCs.

This recent issue could have allowed a bad actor to elevate their permissions on the machine, meaning that if they could gain access to the device, they may be able to become and admin and compromise the whole system as well as potentially a larger network the device is on. Of course, this was a problem and so Microsoft quickly implemented a fix and pushed it as part of their April patch Tuesday pushes.

For some users, this created confusion, however. For the average end user without much experience in the IT realm, it's not recommended that they play around in the system folders beyond the areas they actively use. Questions about the root folders and system files are best left to IT professionals, but some users do see it and questioned the appearance of a new folder.

The update was confirmed by Microsoft to include a new folder that is created on the base drive of the unit named "inetpub". Any device with the update will have had this folder created and it's highly recommended that users do not play with the folder and do not delete it as it could make your device once again vulnerable to the above issue with the patch removed.
