Racking Servers and Network Equipment
Most everyone likely has some experience seeing a pile of IT equipment somewhere. You've got servers, switches, batteries, and more all piled up in a room somewhere and it's tough to make heads or tails of it. Racking server room equipment offers a multitude of benefits that contribute significantly to the efficiency, organization, and functionality of an IT infrastructure.
The use of racks optimizes the space in the area. It allows the use of more vertical space without the need to stack items directly on top of one another rather than forcing you to either stack it or spread it out across the floor.
This space optimization allows for things like improved airflow/cooling (which can help to prevent heat damage and possibly extend the life of equipment) as well as improves accessibility. With better accessibility, problems can be identified and addressed quicker with less need to move around other equipment to get to the one piece that may be having an issue. This could ultimately lead to reduced costs down the line regarding maintenance and troubleshooting.
Along these same lines, it make upgrades and replace a single device with a newer version. It also provides the ability to accommodate more hardware as the organization grows while maintaining the current network organization.
Finally, the use of a rack can make a server room look much more professional (more like what you'd see on a commercial) and actually can help prevent theft. Even if someone were to gain access to the equipment, they may now need to gather tools and hang around to unscrew items from the rack, something that can be a strong deterrent over the ability to just unplug something and pick it up off the floor.
