SSD Data Storage Expected To See Price Spikes, Shortages

Over the past year, the explosive growth of artificial intelligence infrastructure has dramatically reshaped the global markets for RAM. It’s something we covered at the start of this year in an earlier edition of Tech Talk News. Unfortunately, that’s not the end of this impact as experts now forecast that SSDs (the data storage drives in most new digital devices), much like RAM, are entering a period of sustained shortages and steep price hikes.

As AI companies continue to need increased storage for their datacenters and manufacturers see the easy money to send mass quantities of storage to them, consumer and enterprise SSD availability is tightening rapidly. Analysts note that demand is growing faster than the supply chain can increase production with manufacturers like Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix already committing significant portions of their production over the next two years to these AI companies – meaning this could become an issue for several years.

Many manufacturers are also deliberately curbing capacity expansion due to higher fabrication costs, equipment shortages, and concerns from oversupplies in the past. The caution could lead to manufacturing not increasing, even as prices rise. It’s a surprising shift for many given that SSD prices had fallen to historic lows in 2023, but now manufacturers are able to reverse that trend. Already, some consumer‑grade drives have increased in price – some doubling.

While this does not appear like it will affect the HDD market as much, that is simply because the HDDs are the physically spinning drives and noticeably slow down most devices to the point where most have been replaced completely over the last few years.

Unfortunately, this means organizations should prepare for continued volatility on IT hardware as now multiple key components begin to see sharp price increases and stock shortages. This will affect pricing on user computers, servers, and everything in between; it could even begin to increase costs indirectly as services that utilize their own infrastructure they need to maintain could see increased costs and begin to pass that on.
