Reminder: Upcoming CJI MFA Requirements
The policy changes announced by the PA State Police (PSP) in conjunction with the FBI to access Criminal Justice Information (CJI) earlier this year concerned the implementation of multi-factor authentication (MFA) for any access to CJI. As we had wrote earlier in the year, this change is something that is expected to go into effect for 2025.
The decision to mandate MFA reflects a proactive stance towards bolstering the safeguarding of sensitive information and preventing unauthorized access to CJI systems. By requiring additional layers of verification beyond passwords, such as biometrics or authentication codes, the institute aims to fortify its defense against cyber threats and mitigate the risk of data breaches.
While the transition to local MFA may entail initial adjustments for users, including familiarization with new authentication procedures, the long-term benefits in terms of data security far outweigh the temporary inconvenience. This proactive approach not only enhances the resilience of CJI's digital infrastructure but also sets a precedent.
Although the new guidance will be in effect, the sentiment currently being shared is that it may not need to be in place immediately, but anyone with access to CJI will at least need to have a plan in place for how they will implement it.
Ridge Support does have a plan for implementing the needed MFA to comply with requirements at police departments. If you have questions about this process or are in need of assistance implementing it at your organization, please feel free to reach out and we will work with you to get that implemented.
