Completing Windows 10 Updates Safely You may have heard that you should never just click on things that popup on your screen. That is certainly a good rule to follow and one that will help to keep your device and data safe from harm. It is a habit that should always be encouraged. With Windows 10, however, Microsoft has implemented a strategy that is designed to make the users job of keeping their system up-to-date easier. They have done this through the use of popups. Users should be on the lookout for popups that look like the below.

If you see something popup like this, especially without another program being open, chances are there is a major Windows update pending. To be safe, you can type “Windows Update” into the search bar on the lower left corner of your screen. You should have an option come up that says “Check for updates”. You will want to click on this.

In the next screen, there are three different things you could see. First, you may see a feature update option. This screen will allow you to update to the latest version of Windows 10. By clicking the download and install option, this will update your device. It is important to note that many of these feature updates will take time and will not allow you to use your device, so plan accordingly.

If you show no feature updates, a screen may come up saying that there are updates available. There should be a button that says download updates instead of the “Check for updates” button in the above image. These tend to be smaller updates and these can be downloaded in the background as you work on your computer. There are some updates that will require a restart to take effect, but the system will not restart until you tell it to do so. Finally, you may have a screen that says you are up to date. This could also mean that the system has not checked for any updates recently, so clicking on the “Check for updates” button can verify this. If it finds an update, it will begin to download automatically.

In order to make sure you do not fall too far behind, it is recommended that you check for updates on a regular basis. Using this method will help to prevent Windows update popups and make sure that your device doesn’t get too far behind in updates.
