We are less than one month away from the 3rd Annual PA Cybersecurity Summit on October 1! Have you registered? Talk about Cloud First or Get There Last

There is no doubt the greatest innovation in IT of the last 10 years has been the public cloud and virtualization. Being able to deploy resources for storage, computing, and communication with 0 capital expenditure, little risk of failure, little expert technical knowledge required (especially true for SaaS offerings), and a near 0 barrier to entry has provided startups and well established enterprises the ability to rapidly develop and deploy new applications and expand business operations in a scalable on-demand fashion. According to RightScale 2017 survey, 89% of their respondents were using the Public Cloud and 95% were using either Private Cloud, Public Cloud, or a Hybrid of the two. C U in Court: How 2 Cities are Lowering Crime Rates through Texting

"You have an upcoming court date and failure to appear will result in the issuance of a warrant for your arrest." It's a text message that no one wants to receive, but as cities, New York and Nashville, have recently found, it's a text message that many need to receive.
A Tale of Two Cities
In 2016, nearly four in ten New York City summons recipients failed to show-up in court. In an effort to curtail the number of missed court appearances, the long arm of the law reached for its smartphone.
As part of a little over a year-long experiment, the city began offering those summoned to court the option of providing their cell phone number to law enforcement. They would receive a text message reminder to appear as their court date approached. Though only about 11% agreed to share their number, this small sample responded well to text message alerts. Cybersecurity Elections Table Top and MS-ISAC Membership

There has been a great deal of work going on around cyber security these days. As noted earlier this afternoon, I along with a number of county CIOs attended the "Tabletop the vote 2018 National Election Cyber Exercise". This truly was an energizing afternoon of three modules of scenarios that we could encounter in relation to election security. The goal was to share and identify best practices across the United States as well as identify areas for improvement. The Pennsylvania participants included election directors, CIOs, Department of State staff, Office of Administration staff, Governor's Office staff, and PEMA staff. The scenarios were moderated by the Department of Homeland Security via a simulcast link. This allowed for other states to participate as well (states included, New Jersey, Kentucky, Rhode Island, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin, Iowa and many others). Read the full Summary.
