TECH TIP: MERGE CONTACTS ON MOBILE DEVICES - APPLE & ANDROID

Apple iPhone & iPad

  • Open the Contacts App
  • If you're in a specific list (such as iCloud contacts), tap Lists in the top-left corner.
  • Tap All Contacts to view all of your saved contacts in one place. (You cannot see the View Duplicates option unless you're in the All Contacts list.)
  • If you have duplicates, you’ll see a prompt at the top of the screen beneath your contact card. Tap View Duplicates.
  • Tap Merge All if you have multiple duplicate contacts.
  • If you only have one duplicate, you can tap the contact name, then tap Merge.
  • If you only have one duplicate, you can tap the contact name, then tap Merge.
  • After that, any duplicate contacts in your phone should be merged together into a single contact card.

Also, if you have enabled Contacts in iCloud (Settings > iCloud (your name at top) > Saved to iCloud (see all) > ensure "Contacts" in enabled (green button) - your changes will be reflected on both your iPhone, iPad, and Mac so you don't have to duplicate the process on each device as long as this iCloud setting is enabled first on all your devices.

----------

Android Phone

To merge contacts on an Android phone, follow these steps:

  • Open the Contacts app on your device.
  • Tap the Google Account icon at the top right corner to ensure you're using the correct account.
  • Select Fix & Manage, then tap Merge & Fix.
  • Choose Merge duplicates to review suggestions or tap Merge All to merge all duplicates at once.
  • If you want to merge specific contacts, tap More, select the contacts, and then tap Merge.

For Samsung devices, the process is similar:

  • Open the Contacts app.
  • Tap the three horizontal lines icon or Menu option.
  • Select Manage Contacts and then Merge Contacts.
  • Choose the contacts to combine and tap Merge. These methods help keep your contact list organized and free from duplicates.
