Level Sensors With Hazardous Location Approvals For Dust

SafePoint
SafePoint® Hazardous Location Version
Confined, dusty areas like storage hoppers, bins & silos for many powder / bulk solids materials have the potential to be combustible.

With the recent addition of the DuraVibe Series with available CSA  (North America), ATEX and IECex approvals, Monitor Technologies offers a large selection of bin level sensors that have options regarding Hazardous Location Approvals for Dust. Application Review ---------

Continuous Level Measurement of Lightweight Material with Low Dielectric Constant
SiloPatrol
SiloPatrol® Cable-Based Level Sensor

Some continuous level sensor technologies can have issues with very lightweight materials since
there is probably a lot of entrained air in the stored material that causes the dielectric to be low and sound absorption to be high.  Monitor Technologies' SiloPatrol level sensor is not affected by these situations.

Below is an example of an application:

SITUATION:
"I can't find a technology to reliably measure the level of my finished product. It is extremely lightweight, about 5 lbs/ft³, and nothing seems to work."

EXPLANATION:
Very lightweight materials can be challenging for some continuous level measurement technologies. There can be a lot of entrapped air (voids) in the stored material that the dielectric is very low and sound absorption is high. A manufacturer of packaging material had this issue. They needed continuous level monitoring of their finished goods bins. The finished product was extremely lightweight, around 5 lbs/ft³.

SOLUTION:
The Monitor Technologies SiloPatrol® Inventory Monitoring System is a smart weight & cable based sensor system. This state-of-the-art weight & cable system is a proven problem solver and will work effectively on lighter materials around 5 lbs/ft³. In addition, the sensor is unaffected by material composition. The local Monitor representative arranged a  demonstration at the manufacturer's facility.
Inverted Cone Style Plumb Bob
Inverted Cone Style Plumb Bob
The electronics/mechanical design
of the sensor combined with an inverted cone-shaped weight (plumb bob) allowed the unit to detect the surface of this lightweight material without sinking into the material.  The SiloPatrol system is now used as a standard on their raw and finished goods silos.

SiloPatrol Application

About SiloPatrol®...
The SiloPatrol® SMU (silo monitoring unit) lowers a weight & cable into the silo until it contacts the material surface. Upon contact the weight & cable system is immediately retracted and the measurement is fed to the plant control system or operator interface.

Features and Advantages...
> Weight and cable-based "Smart" level sensor Is unaffected by material composition
Measuring range up to 150 feet (46m) for powder bulk solids material levels in vessels. (Works for some liquid & slurry applications with optional ball float plumb bob)
> Combines Hall Effect sensor technology, sealed bi-directional optical sensing, a split-compartment enclosure, isolated outputs and other features to produce a reliable level measuring system designed for the harshest conditions
>  Industry-best measurement resolution of 1/100' (0.12"; 3mm)
>   Virtually maintenance-free
> Wireless Bluetooth® set-up
>  Modbus capability
> Additional versatility through selection of plumb bobs
>  Automate inventory management with the use of SiloTrack(TM) PC & Cloud or a variety of operator interface devices like the HMI2
