Detecting Objects with Camera Trainer

Camera Trainer uses machine learning to allow you to define objects of interest and generate detectors for them. Only objects with distinct edges can be detected with Camera Trainer, and the edge pattern needs to be sufficiently different from the background as well as other objects in the field of view. For example, a person wearing a helmet or safety vest cannot be distinguished from one without these items. Similarly, a sports car cannot be differentiated from a SUV.

Edges are important for Camera Trainer. When training a detector, make it slightly larger than the outer edges of the objects. This will ensure that the edges are well-captured by the detector. When the application calls for counting vehicles, training the detector on the windshield area may be simpler and more reliable than training the detector for the full front of a vehicle, since there are more variations in the shapes/edges of vehicles that would need to covered.

Camera Trainer detectors are also limited to a single perspective. For example, the front of a vehicle looks different than the side of a vehicle. If the application requires Camera Trainer to detect vehicles viewed from the front and the side, you'll need to create a separate detector for each.

While the examples here are focused on vehicle detection, Camera Trainer can be used for much more. Other applications include:

  • People counting (without false counts from shopping carts or baggage)
  • Detecting people on train tracks
  • Box pile up in production lines
  • Icicle detection
  • Camera tamper detection via markers
  • Object states, including open, closed, or other position
Tip: Learn how to set up Camera Trainer

Camera Trainer is available on all Intelligent Video Analytics cameras with firmware version 7.10 or higher. There is a no-charge activation with license needed and setup must be done with Configuration Manager 6.20 or higher. There is no additional integration effort needed and it's fully supported by ONVIF.
