How to Use FaceTime
Missing your family, friends, social connections - Use FaceTime to
Video or Audio Chat for FREE when on WiFi (including international)
only for Apple's iPad, iPhone & Mac. Data plan not required.
(for both Android & Apple devices we'll explain Google Duo below.)
WHERE TO START?
FaceTime allows you to have video chats with users of other Apple devices, Mac, iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad.
  • You can make FaceTime calls over cellular data connection or for free over WiFi (including International). *Remember to disable your cellular data plan in Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data (disable) to use WiFi ONLY!
  • You can also make and receive FaceTime calls on WiFi ONLY models of iPads.
  • All parties must set-up FaceTime in Settings to allow FaceTime calls. Settings > FaceTime > FaceTime (enable). The button is green when it is enabled and is changed by tapping it.
  • You’ll be asked to enter your Apple ID and password.
  • FaceTime is pre-installed on your Apple device, and is also in the App Store.
MAKING YOUR FIRST FACETIME CALL
  • Go to your Contacts
  • Select the FaceTime icon
  • Visual uses the Front Camera
  • Audio only is available only when you start in the FaceTime App (see below)
  • The person who's being called has the option to answer the call or not.
Minnie Mouse made this call to Mickey.
Minnie, the one who initiated the call, is in the small box in the upper right of the screen. Mickey, who she called, is in the center. On Mickey's screen is it visa-versa.

Mickey will receive a notification asking him if he wants the FaceTime call.
He has the option to ACCEPT or DECLINE!
SETUP FOR GROUP FACETIME CALLS
First check to see if your operating system version is recent enough to support a Group FaceTime call,
  • To check your OS version on an iPhone/iPad, go to Settings > General > About. On a Mac, click the Apple logo at the top left of your screen, and then About This Mac.
  • On iPhones/iPads, that's iOS 12.1.4 or newer, and on Macs, it's MacOS 10.14.3 or newer. Some older operating systems will give you just audio FaceTime - and that's enough for FREE International WiFi calls!
STARTING A GROUP FACETIME CALL
A Group FaceTime call is done by starting in the FaceTime app. The FaceTime app will look in your Contacts, so it's best top populate the contacts first, before you start the group FaceTime Call.
  • Tap the Plus button in the top right corner and find a contact from there.
  • When you've selected a contact, you'll see the green buttons to start a FaceTime call either with Audio or Video.
  • Then, keep hitting the Plus button to add as many people as you need to with the plus button, and then begin the call.
GOT A GROUP CHAT IN MESSAGES?
TURN IT INTO A GROUP FACETIME CALL
iPhone/iPad > If you have a group chat in the Messages app, you can press the group icon at the top of the chat screen to show additional details. You'll find the button for FaceTime there.

Mac >
  • Open the FaceTime app. If you can't find it, just hit Command+Space, and type in FaceTime, and select it from the results.
  • Once open, enter the email address or phone number of the person you want to speak to, or type in their name if they are already in your contacts.
  • Then once you have everyone you want selected, begin the call by clicking either the Audio or Video button. If you've already had a FaceTime call with a specific group, you can tap that group in your call history, then select the FaceTime icon (it looks like the outline of an old-fashioned camera).
USING VOICE COMMANDS VIA SIRI
Siri must be activated in Settings > Siri & Search, then Minnie says " Siri, FaceTime (or FaceTime Audio) Mickey Mouse" and it's like magic!
GOOGLE DUO: FOR BOTH APPLE AND ANDROID DEVICES
Google "Duo" lets users make free video calls using a phone number. The main difference between FaceTime and Duo is FaceTime is only for Apple devices and Duo is cross-platform, meaning both Android and Apple devices can communicate using the same app. Both apps have end-to-end encryption, allow group calls, and are supported on WiFi and mobile data connections.

Duo is based on phone numbers, allowing users to call someone from their contact list who also has the Duo app installed on their device. The app automatically switches between Wi-Fi and cellular networks.

Getting Started:
  • Download the Google Duo app for your Apple or Android device.
  • Agree to Google's Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
  • Designate whether Duo can send you notifications (YES, but you may want to customize the type of notification) and access your microphone and camera (YES).
  • Verify your phone number - if you are already using a Google account on the device, it will be located automatically (Gmail is a Google account).
  • Type in the one-time verification code sent via SMS (text message).
  • The app's main interface will then appear.

Duo's main screen that is split into two, with the top half showing you what your camera sees, and the bottom portion offering up a search bar with a 'Create Group' tab below. When you first see this screen, you'll be asked to give Duo access to your contacts (YES).

To start making a video call: Type in the name of the contact you want to video call in the search bar > Select their name from the list > Tap on the 'Video call' icon in the center at the bottom of your screen.

When you start a call the "Knock Knock" feature is enabled, which allows the person you are calling to see you while it is ringing - this prevents spam calls - so smile for the camera! (This can be disabled in Duo's Settings menu.)

The person's who's being called will get a notification to answer the call, or not.

Have fun video chatting!
