March 2021
Nonprofit Survey Report
The survey was created by the Technical Assistance working group to understand the needs of local nonprofits. The survey was distributed to over 400 nonprofit organizations based in the Greater Lehigh Valley, PA (Carbon, Lehigh, and Northampton counties). The survey launched in November, 2020 and the data from 90 nonprofits was collected. The Technical Assistance working group is using the results of this survey to inform workshops, trainings, and resource guides to help fill the needs identified in the survey.
Main findings:
  • 72% of organizations are facing challenges meeting increased demand for their services
  • Smaller organizations (budgets under $200,000) were disproportionately challenged by the impacts of COVID-19
  • 90% of organizations faced some challenges with fundraising, with 62% citing extreme or significant challenges
  • Nonprofit staff are regularly working over their capacity, while many organizations have been forced to lay off, furlough, or reduce staff hours
Paycheck Protection Program - Second Draw
$150 billion of the allocated $284 billion is still available for distribution through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).
Nonprofits with fewer than 20 Employees:
Until March 9, 2021 the Small Business Administration and PPP lenders will process loan applications ONLY from nonprofits and for-profit businesses with fewer than 20 employees.
The exclusive small-employer PPP processing window is designed to provide more equitable relief by “targeting the PPP to the smallest businesses and those that have been left behind in previous relief efforts” to ensure that lenders give smaller employers the attention they need to work through the application process. If you think your nonprofit may be eligible for an initial loan or a second draw loan, now is the best time to contact a lender and find out how much relief may be available. Learn more at
Community Conversations
The Strategic Response team has hosted four community conversations so far that have focused on food access, housing issues, COVID-19 trends and updates, CARES funding, legal concerns, and nonprofit resources. These highly productive conversations have led to new connections and initiatives, as well as a deeper industry understanding of community needs. We look forward to having you attend future community calls as we continue the critical and collective work of helping the Greater Lehigh Valley Community.

COVID-19 Vaccine
On February 27, 2021 the FDA authorized the third COVID-19 vaccine, which was developed by Johnson & Johnson. This new vaccine only requires one dose and does not have to be kept at freezing temperatures, unlike the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. This makes it easier to transport and administer to patients. Johnson & Johnson are slated to distribute 20 million vaccines by the end of March.
Strategic Response Team
Technical Assistance Working Group

The Strategic Response Team (SRT) launched in the wake of COVID19 to provide a rapid, informed, and coordinated approach to assessing community need and quickly allocating dollars to the areas of greatest need. Soon afterwards, the SRT spun out a Technical Assistance Working Group to ensure area non-profit organizations have the specialized resources, information, and support they need to continue operations and respond to rapidly changing community needs. The TA Working Group is a community collaboration consisting of representatives from funding organizations, local government, grassroots community organizations, health networks, community health and non-profit organizations who bring their varied perspectives to the table to create the most effective impact.
