Grant Opportunities Delivered to Your Virtual Door

When developing an SBIR/STTR strategy, seeking solicitations posted by desired agencies, on either SBIR.gov or the agency websites, is usually required. Often times, this step is time consuming and offers few immediate results to match the innovator's skillset or concept. To maximize the chances of success, the innovator must be diligent in reviewing solicitations upon pre-release and schedule times to do such. Unfortunately, the solicitation search process may leave the innovator discouraged and less motivated to perform the process on a regular basis. As an insult to injury, this method does not address the variety of other Broad Agency Announcements (BAAs) that are released at random times by different Department of Defense (DoD) agencies and NASA. These BAAs may involve SBIR or may involve some other funding mechanism to address a critical need, and the innovator may discover them with little, if any, time to prepare a proposal.

Time to Award Can Vary Widely by Agency

The SBIR and STTR policy directive recommends that most agencies issue awards no more than 180 calendar days from solicitation close.

The federal General Accounting Office (GAO) recently presented a report on the timeliness of agencies' SBIR and STTR proposal review and award issuance. This report examines the time agencies spend issuing SBIR and STTR awards and the factors that affect the time spent, among other things. Within the 11 agencies, GAO reviewed 28 component agencies that participate in these programs. GAO analyzed agency-provided award data from fiscal years 2016 to 2018 for 15,453 awards and interviewed officials from the Small Business Administration and 26 of the component agencies.

"Becoming an Investor-Ready Entrepreneur" Year-end review

2019 was a great year for SBTDC's "Becoming an Investor-Ready Entrepreneur" (IRE) program. The SBTDC's Technology Commercialization Team delivered three IRE events across North Carolina. Request from the North Carolina Investment Forum

The  North Carolina Investment Forum  (NCIF) was launched in 2017, and is part of  CREATE , an economic development research center at UNC Chapel Hill's Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise. NCIF works to identify and develop strategies for how and where the private capital community can have a positive impact on the economic growth of North Carolina. Specifically, NCIF seeks to (1) promote creation, launch and investment in new businesses, (2) provide resources for growth of established businesses, and (3) stimulate private sector employment in economically distressed communities in North Carolina. Through these efforts they hope to build a vibrant network of investors providing capital to North Carolina companies, bridge the growing urban-rural prosperity gap, and work with governmental entities in a non-partisan manner.

Please assist the NCIF as they seek to better understand the business landscape in North Carolina by filling out this survey. The survey pursues to understand growth opportunities and constraints encountered by small to medium sized firms in North Carolina. NCIF wants to identify attitudes, regulations and infrastructure that affect firm growth potential, and understand how successful communities in our state support entrepreneurs with strong growth prospects. Participation in the survey will enable NCIF to measure current success and identify potential opportunities for growth in North Carolina. If you have questions, please email NCIF directly at  createprosperity@kenan-flagler.unc.edu .

Hot off the Press - Intellectual Property Guide

THE SBTDC's  Intellectual Property Guide  is intended to help small businesses and inventors in the development of their inventions and in the maintenance of their intellectual property rights.
Maybe you've already developed an invention.
  • What will you do next?
  • Apply for a patent?
  • Contact manufacturers?
  • Start manufacturing it yourself?
These questions must be carefully considered in order to get the full benefit of the efforts put into developing an invention. The purpose of this guide is not to discourage you from proceeding with any particular option, but to educate you about different ways to proceed with your idea and the potential time and financial investments that may be involved. This guide will educate you about patents and provide helpful references and sources of assistance that you may need in order to be successful. We emphasize the utilization of resources at local libraries, universities, and on the Internet. In addition, this guide explores trademark and copyright issues and the protection of internet domain names.
