Humboldt County Bar Association Gives Big!!
At our May 16th court session, Humboldt County Bar Association presented Teen Court with a big check for $2,500. They not only support our program, but also specifically help our youth to attend the annual CA statewide Youth Court Summit, which will be held at University of Redlands this year. We are so grateful for their sustained mentoring and financial support of Teen Court. A huge thank you for making a real difference in Humboldt County teens' lives!!

Know Your Rights Presentation at Northcoast Youth Summit
On Saturday March 23, Program Coordinator Jenny Downs along with youth Leaders presented a workshop at the annual summit at CR. Their presentation was called “Know Your Rights: Equity and Justice for All!” They did a fantastic job and had a great turnout. They were also able to recruit for our spring Jury Training.

Spring Jury Training
On March 28, Teen Court Leaders trained 12 new youth volunteers as jurors. We currently have a pool of 87 active jury members. Each court session involves around 30 youth, so it is quite an event at the courthouse on Teen Court hearing days.

Thank you to Fortuna Rotary and Humboldt Redwoods Company
On April 3, Sacha presented on Teen Court along with youth volunteers Jacqueline and Stephanie. Stephanie garnered interest and support in starting a referral relationship with Fortuna High School and Jacqueline was able to secure a $500 donation from Humboldt Redwood Company. Both youth were such great representatives of the program, that Sacha hardly had to speak.

Student Attorney Training
On April 17, Teen Court Leaders trained 12 new attorneys at the Teen Center. We are delighted to provide this opportunity to a new crew of youth who are very excited to deepen their connection to Teen Court.

New Mentor Attorney
We would like to welcome Jeff Monsell as a new mentor attorney volunteer. He is part of the law firm Stokes, Hamer, Kirk & Eads, LLP in Bayside. Jeff was actually a high school student volunteer with Lassen County Youth Court, so he is familiar with the restorative approach. He has already served at a couple of our court sessions and was duly impressed with our process. Welcome!

Volunteer Appreciation
On May 16th, Teen Court volunteers were appreciated at our end of the year celebration at Paul's Live from NY Pizza. Though Teen Court holds sessions year-round, it always feels great to take a moment to appreciate all of the good work that our youth do for teens in need of a supportive and corrective environment. Thank you to each and every youth volunteer that shows up and cares in this world. YOU make a difference! And together WE make a difference.
Teen Court's Ultimate Volunteer of the Year
Alex was awarded volunteer of the year for having the most cumulative hours of volunteering with Teen Court. She started volunteering with Teen Court in 2016 as a 9th grader. In the ensuing years, she has grown to become a true leader. She is a youth that others look up to, in their lives and in the courtroom. She has been in our Leaders program for 3 full years, served countless times as student attorney and as student judge. She has a wonderful grace when she presides as judge. She never fails to ask compassionate yet probing questions that help round out the understanding of a case. This year she served as a CA statewide youth advisory board member for the California Association of Youth Courts (CAYC). Alex is a graduating senior this year, and will soon be off to college. As you can see, she has her sights set high. We are so thankful for her enduring presence at Teen Court. We will miss you! But wish you all the very best in your further pursuits. Congratulations on being an outstanding individual!!
Volunteers of the Month
March: Daniel
Daniel consistently volunteers with Teen Court as a steadfast juror. He also stepped up into a new leadership role by recently serving as jury foreperson. Thank you!

April: Justin
Justin started volunteering with Teen Court this year, and he recently was trained as a student attorney. We look forward to him handling his first case. Thank you!

May: Lila
This spring, Lila was trained as a student attorney and she has already served as such. She brings care and compassion to her work at Teen Court. We are very appreciative!

Job Shadow
The Job Shadow/Interview a Professional assignment is very popular lately. We have been able to pair up youth with professionals in the field of medicine, video game development, the law, and more.
The youth either go in and shadow at the professional's office or interview them in-person or over the phone when necessary. They focus on questions such as: What kind of schooling or training is needed? What kind of jobs helped lead up to your current position? What do you like best about your job? What is the most challenging about your job? What advice do you have for someone interested in this career? What can I do now to prepare for this type of profession?
Thank you to everyone who has helped out our teens. If you have a profession you love and want to share, let us know and we can put you in our pool of potential job shadow opportunities.
