Mike Tougias Author Visit - Wednesday, July 13 from 7-8 pm

Join is for a special night with author Michael Tougias. He'll be talking about his book The Finest Hours: The True Story of the U.S. Coast Guard's Most Daring Sea Rescue (written with Casey Sherman).

On February 18, 1852, an astonishing maritime event began when a ferocious nor'easter split in half a 500-foot long oil tanker, the Pendleton, approximately one mile off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Incredibly, just twenty miles away, a second oil tanker, the Fort Mercer, also split in half. On both fractured tankers men were trapped on the severed bows and sterns, and all four sections were sinking in 60-foot seas. Thus begin a life and death drama of survival, heroism, and a series of tragic mistakes. Of the 84 seaman aboard the tankers, 70 would be rescued and 14 would lose their lives. The rescue that followed is considered the Coast Guard's greatest small boat rescue.

The author will also discuss the making of the movie, working with screenwriters, and will share some humorous stories about the actors and his cameo in the movie.

Sign up is required for this program and begins on June 29.

Returning to the Moon - and What Comes Next - Wednesday, August 10 from 7-8 pm

2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the final Apollo missions to the Moon. Join JPL/NASA Solar System Ambassador M.J. Johnson for a discussion of the state of crewed missions to space. Afterwards, stick around for telescopic views of Saturn, the Moon, and more! (Weather permitting.)

This discussion does not require a technical background, is open to all ages, and should be accessible to broad audiences with an interest in space exploration.
