At the December 3, 2015 Board of Education meeting, members of HC DrugFree's Teen Advisory Council (TAC) presented a thank you card to the Board for recognizing TAC by proclaiming October as Substance Abuse Awareness Month in Howard County. Congratulations to HC DrugFree's Executive Director - Leadership MD Class of 2015
Joan Webb Scornaienchi, a member of the Leadership Maryland Class of 2015, was honored on Tuesday, December 8 at a graduation ceremony held at the Lord Baltimore Hotel in Baltimore City.

Leadership Maryland is a professional development program dedicated to building a stronger Maryland by educating, cultivating and connecting our state's leaders.

Throughout 2015, Joan and her classmates traveled across all regions of the state to experience this hands-on learning program focused on the state's most vital social, economic and environmental issues.

Leadership Howard County Forum Held
On December 4, Leadership Howard County held a
"This Just In" forum to discuss the heroin addiction epidemic facing Maryland today, led by Joan Webb Scornaienchi, HC DrugFree's Executive Director, and Sgt. James Capone of HCPD Narcotics. Pictured are James, Joan, and Robert Jeffrey of The Jeffrey Group at Morgan Stanley who sponsored the event.

HC DrugFree's Teen Advisory Council (TAC) meets one Monday evening a month from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at The Barn (Oakland Mills Village Center) and is open to all Howard County high school students. The next TAC meeting will be held on December 14. Community service hours are available. Free Training to Save a Life! Opioid Overdose Response Training
If your child, spouse or friend is abusing opioids (prescription pain medicines such as Percocet or Vicodin, and street drugs such as heroin), attend the free training offered by the Howard County Health Department.

The next class is scheduled for Monday, December 14 at 8:00 AM at the Health Department.

Free Hands-Only CPR Training
It's the holiday season, and stress levels are high. If someone collapses from Sudden Cardiac Arrest, would you know what to do? Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services is offering a FREE CPR class on Wednesday, December 16 from 6 PM - 8 PM at 6751 Columbia Gateway Drive, Suite 400, Columbia, MD 21046.

The class reviews adult, child, and infant CPR, AED use, and choking relief.  This class is appropriate for all ages so bring the whole family. (Please note that this is a non-certification class.)

Permanent Medication Disposal Boxes
Howard County residents can drop off unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications at 3 locations in the County where permanent disposal boxes have been installed. Boxes are located at the Howard County Police Northern District Station (3410 Courthouse Drive, Ellicott City) open 24/7, the Howard County Police Southern District Station (11226 Scaggsville Road, Laurel) open 24/7, and the Gary Arthur Community Center (2400 Route 97, Cooksville) open 7 AM to 9 PM Monday-Saturday, and 9 AM to 6 PM on Sundays.

Don't share your leftover meds with others - sharing drugs can be extremely dangerous!
The other person taking the drug may not have been seen by a physician to determine if he or she indeed needs the drug, what dosage is appropriate, and possible allergic reactions or adverse reactions due to other medications being taken.
