Ken speaks from experience about how Western innovators, venture investors and dealmakers can master China.

From 2001 to 2011, he ran SVB in Silicon Valley and then spent four years living in Shanghai, leading the technology bank's efforts to set up a joint venture with Shanghai Pudong Development Bank. He was not totally prepared for all that happened.

MTY-Austin-China Links

In more trend-spotting of tech hubs, I ventured to Monterrey, MX, where I was a keynote speaker at IncMTY Summit, November 13-14, held on two campuses – UANL and

Tec de Monterrey.

My global talk highlighted quick shifts in technology sectors and regions, and underscored how Mexico could rise up with a new tech economy, in the shadows of China and India.

You ask, why MTY? It’s a large city in northern Mexico that is booming due in part to reshoring, mainly from China.

Plus, Latin America’s young, fast-growing population, expanding middle class, rapid technology penetration and adoption rates

are reshaping industries and creating new market opportunities, to quote VC Rogelio de los Santos of

Dalus Capital.

Throughout my visit, I engaged with community leaders including UANL Professor Nasser Mohamed in this developing hub. Universities are always a key stimulus for tech innovation.

View a video of my chat on stage with IncMTY CEO Thomas Michael Hogg who is spearheading initiatives to push Monterrey forward with cross-border links to Texas tech capital Austin, alongside outreach by David Cao at his tech manufacturing accelerator

F50 Nexus.
