Telling You're Dog "No"!

Is it okay to tell your dog "No"? This can be a bit of a nuanced question. First and foremost, if your dog has not been taught what the word "No" means, saying it will likely be ineffective. For example, if your dog gets into the trash and you yell "No," but the dog doesn't understand English, how would they know that "No" means to stop what they’re doing?

However, if you've taken the time to teach your dog the meaning of "No" and are consistent in your communication, it can be a useful tool. So, how do we teach a dog what "No" means? We use negative punishment (-P), a concept from operant conditioning.

For example, if you hold a piece of food in your hand and your dog tries to reach for it, you close your hand and say "No." Over time, your dog will learn that the word "No" is associated with losing access to something valuable. Through repetition, your dog will understand that "No" signals an unpleasant consequence.

So, before telling your dog "No," ask yourself, "Does my dog understand what 'No' means?" Repeating a command that your dog doesn’t fully grasp will likely have little to no effect.
