April 2023 Newsletter

Message From the President

Dear Temecula Valley

I am very excited about our first Symphony-logue at 2:30 pm on April 8th, presented by conductor John Mario and Artist-in-Residence Ruslan Biryukov! It promises to be an informative and entertaining presentation and will highlight music the symphony will be performing in the upcoming April 22nd concert.

We are grateful for Ann Lebedeff’s financial support for this event. I am also pleased to announce that EAT Marketplace restaurant will be catering the event. Chef Leah DiBernardo never disappoints with her delectable assortment of hors d'oeuvres. On a side note, Leah recently was awarded Citizen of the Year by the Temecula Chamber of Commerce!

If you’d like to attend but haven’t reserved your spot yet, please contact me ASAP or call (951) 587-1536 as we only have a few spaces available.

I hope to see you at our April 22nd concert! Our 2020 concerto winner Alina Hernandez will be performing a movement from the Tchaikovsky violin concerto. She is currently attending Manhattan School of Music, and I’ve heard her concerto sounds wonderful!

Of course you don’t want to miss Ruslan Biryukov performing the 3rd and 4th movements of the Shostakovich Eb Major Cello Concerto. I’m also looking forward to hearing Mozart’s Don Giovanni Overture and Brahm’s First Symphony in it’s entirety.

TVS now has a card reader so for those of you who purchased tickets with a credit card at the last concert, please know that the process will be much faster!

Warm regards,

Susan Miyamoto

Temecula Valley Symphony President

Strategic Plan Update

The strategic plan for the Temecula Valley Symphony—titled A New Beginning—is now starting to guide decisions for our 2023-24 season. The first change we have made is to move up the process of finalizing that season, to the early months of 2023. By advancing the timing of making concert dates and selecting repertoire, we can build enthusiasm for the 2023-24 season over a longer period of time. This will increase subscription ticket sales and permit a more extensive fundraising campaign.

We are looking forward to dramatically increasing both the total number of donors to TVS and the total dollars contributed for the new season. It is greatly encouraging to see the TVS board and family of volunteers committed to the strategic goal of bringing TVS into robust financial health.

Stay tuned for more news of the Temecula Valley Symphony strategic plan in our upcoming monthly newsletters.

Featured Volunteer, Dr. Chelsea Howell

It would be very difficult to run the symphony without our volunteers. They are the heart of the symphony and we truly appreciate the time they give to help further our mission and goals.

Dr. Chelsea Howell is not only the principal clarinetist in the symphony but she also works hard behind the scenes contracting musicians, chairing the Orchestra Committee and serving as vice-president on the TVS Board of Directors. As our contractor she finds musicians to play in each concert, which is not an easy task, and the instrumentation is not always the same.

As an accomplished clarinetist, Chelsea has an impressive background receiving her Bachelor’s degree from Indiana University, her Master's degree from the University of Michigan and her Doctorate from UCLA.  She has played in the Los Angeles Lyric Opera Orchestra, Golden State Pops Orchestra, and Brentwood Symphony.  Chelsea has a passion for teaching with her own successful studio in Irvine. Her students have participated in All-State Honor Band and Orchestra, and numerous other youth orchestra programs. Chelsea was a teaching artist for the Los Angeles Philharmonic for 11 years where she worked with a diverse student population in a workshop series about Classical composers and their musical works.

Chelsea resides in Orange County with her husband and 2 beautiful daughters ages 12 and 14 years old. One of her favorite things to do in her free time is to hang out with her family at Disneyland.
