Species at Risk Partnerships on Agricultural Lands (SARPAL) Program
2022 important dates:
- Intake opens: February 14, 2022, at 9:00 AM
- Intake closes: February 18, 2022, at 5:00 PM or as soon as funds are fully allocated
- Eligible invoice dates: April 1 to December 15, 2022
- Claim deadline: December 15, 2022
Program highlights:
- 50% cost-share level, to a maximum of $20,000 per farm business
- First come, first served (the program will close as soon as funds are fully allocated)
- Up to $50/acre for delayed haying projects
- Up to $50/tree for tree planting projects
- Up to $11.50/m of permanent fence and $2.45/m for temporary fence
- Up to a maximum of $2,000 in in-kind
- Tree Service Agreements for spring 2023 tree planting
- Conservation Agreements must be signed between the producer and Environment and Climate Change Canada. These agreements will ensure habitat protection for SAR.

Rural Economic Development (RED) program
Labour attraction and retention targeted intake
The program helps local communities to attract and retain workers, create new jobs and help support families and businesses affected by COVID-19. Municipalities, not-for-profit organizations, Indigenous communities, and local service boards can make applications for funding beginning February 7, 2022, until March 7, 2022.
This funding will support initiatives that address barriers to economic development and position rural communities for economic growth and job creation, such as:
- Marketing and outreach campaigns to grow rural Ontario’s workforce.
- Connecting youth and apprentices to job opportunities and placements.
- Creating dedicated spaces such as innovation hubs and youth centres to develop partnerships and foster innovation.
Guidelines and application will be available on February 7.

Canadian Agriculture Partnership Funding
Advancing Beekeeper Business Capacity
To diversify and build beekeeper business capacity through support for: bee breeding for pest/disease resistance; development or marketing of niche/retail products; or pollination services expansion.
Honey Bee Health Management
Projects will focus on equipment, new construction or modifications to existing beekeeping equipment, as well as adopting or implementing practices to prevent the introduction and spread of honey bee pests and disease within a beekeeping operation.

Addressing Agri-food Sector Labour Force Challenges,
Applications deadline: February 15, 2022.
This funding is to support short-term projects that focus on helping to build a resilient and strong labour force for the agriculture, agri-food and agri-products sector by assisting to identify and address challenges and opportunities related to promoting, attracting, training and retaining labour.
Project partnerships of not-for-profit organizations* involved in the agriculture, agri-food and agri-products sector are eligible to apply. For-profit businesses are not eligible to apply.
Eligible projects include those that:
- Investigate challenges related to labour supply access, and identify opportunities to strengthen access to suitable labour supply and labour retention in the sector
- Support activities that require additional data or validation prior to the implementation of labour attraction or training projects
- Work to characterize and understand methods to reach identified labour force audiences
- Implement new or enhanced approaches to attracting or retaining labour (e.g. promotion of in-demand skills and career opportunities in the sector)
- Develop/implement new or existing programs or expand existing successful sector specific training approaches that address identified current and emerging challenges

The Livestock Veterinary Innovation Initiative
This initiative is a new, cost-share initiative that will increase the access options for veterinary care, especially in rural and northern Ontario, to better support animal health, the livestock agri-food sector and the strength of the province's food supply. Initiative guidelines and the application will be available soon. Applications will be accepted from February 15, 2022 to March 31, 2022.

Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation Competitiveness (AMIC) program
Program to help companies get the tools, technology and talent they need to grow, compete and innovate in an increasingly competitive global market.
Eligibility requirements include:
- minimum of 10 employees
- three or more years of financial statements, and
- minimum of $500,000 in eligible project costs.
The first round of applications will be open until February 10, 2022.

The Invest North Program is designed to boost economic growth in Northern Ontario by encouraging businesses to invest in transformative, strategic and complementary business development opportunities in Northern communities. Nutrient Management Courses
Farmers who want to prepare a Nutrient Management (NM) strategy for their own farm for a future barn building or manure storage project will need to complete the Introduction to NM course and the NM Regulations & Protocols course.
Course Options
NEW - Virtual Classroom - An instructor will teach the course live using Zoom.

Ontario Pesticide Education Courses
The Ontario Pesticide Education Program (OPEP) supports Ontario farmers and pesticide vendors to achieve pesticide safety certification and training.
In-Person courses:
Earlton March 18th – 9am and 1pm
Earlton March 19th – 9am and 1pm
These in-person sessions are Refresh & Rewrite, meaning that you are asked to study on your own and arrive prepared for an up to 2 hour review before writing the test. Everyone is welcome, even a person certifying for the first time. The courses are half-day to limit contact.
Register for either the morning or the afternoon course at opep.ca or call 1 800 652 8573. You must register for a course due to restrictions on course sizes due to COVID rules. If you are having trouble registering, please contact Claude at 705 499 6900.

A recent article in Field Crop News high lighted the importance of manure management:
Manure - Tackling the Frequently Asked Questions
When fertilizer prices start to increase so do the number of questions asked about manure! Manure is a carefully guarded treasure - brown gold - for livestock producers that have figured out the nutrient and organic matter value. However, with the increase in available organic amendments from municipal sources or from farms with more manure than landbase this is a relatively new concept for many crop producers that have access to manure or other organic materials.

Partenariat relatif aux espèces en péril présentes sur les terres agricoles (PEPTA)
Le Partenariat relatif aux espèces en péril présentes sur les terres agricoles (PEPTA) est une initiative d’Environnement et Changement climatique Canada (ECCC) qui consiste à collaborer avec les agriculteurs pour favoriser le rétablissement d’espèces en péril sur les terres agricoles. Le PEPTA soutient financièrement les actions de conservation recommandées qui visent actuellement 12 espèces en péril prioritaires. Le PEPTA assure le financement d’activités de conservation sur le terrain qui apportent un soutien à diverses espèces en péril mais cible tout particulièrement les espèces suivantes : la pie-grièche migratrice, le bruant de Henslow, l’hirondelle rustique, le goglu des prés, la sturnelle des prés, le bruant sauterelle, le blaireau d’Amérique, la petite chauve-souris brune, la couleuvre fauve de l’Est, le bourdon bohémien, le bourdon à tache rousse et le monarque.

Investissement de 4 millions de dollars pour aider les agriculteurs à accéder à des soins vétérinaires
BLYTH — Les gouvernements du Canada et de l’Ontario investissent jusqu’à 4 millions de dollars dans le cadre du Partenariat canadien pour l’agriculture (le Partenariat) afin d’offrir aux agriculteurs un accès accru à des services vétérinaires au moment et à l’endroit où ils en ont besoin.

Programme pour le développement régional : Volet Innovation et compétitivité dans le secteur de la fabrication de pointe
Apprenez comment les entreprises admissibles peuvent obtenir une aide pour réaliser des investissements en technologie, en équipement ou en compétences pour améliorer leur compétitivité.
Financement
Jusqu’à 15 % des coûts du projet admissibles.
Prêts
Financement jusqu’à hauteur de 15 % pour un montant maximum de 5 millions de dollars, sans intérêt pendant la durée du projet (jusqu’à quatre ans).
Si vous atteignez vos cibles en matière d’investissement et de création ou de perfectionnement d’emplois, jusqu’à 30 % du prêt pourra être pardonné (jusqu’à un montant maximum de 500 000 $).

La période de présentation des demandes se déroule du 17 janvier 2022 au 10 février 2022.

Le fumier est un précieux trésor, de l'or brun en fait, pour les éleveurs qui reconnaissent sa valeur en éléments nutritifs et en matière organique. Cependant, l'offre accrue d'amendements organiques provenant de sources municipales ou d'exploitations agricoles qui génèrent plus de fumier que ce que peuvent recevoir leurs superficies disponibles représente un concept relativement nouveau pour bon nombre de producteurs de cultures qui ont accès à du fumier ou à d'autres matières organiques.
