Countdown to the High Holy Days

Tot Shabbat with Catered Dinner is Back from Summer Break

No need to worry at Tot Shabbat!
Led by Rabbi Magat and Cantor Amanda Edmondson, families with young children will enjoy upbeat songs, a short story, and a talk with the Rabbi on the bimah during these brief services. The perfect way to introduce your little ones to the tradition of Friday nights. Following services, enjoy a delicious dinner provided by Sisterhood, of course at no charge!

Erev Shabbat Service - Nachamu

Shabbat Nachamu (Sabbath of comforting) takes its name from the haftarah from Isaiah in the Book of Isaiah 40:1-26 that speaks of comforting the Jewish people for their suffering. It is the haftarah of consolation leading up to the holiday of Rosh Hashanah.

Selichot and Study

Temple Emanu-El presents a beautiful introduction to the High Holy Days. The evening begins with a film and discussion followed by a special oneg.  The evening concludes with the Selichot Service-a time for reflection that will help prepare you spiritually for the upcoming holidays.

MazelTones Information
Under the direction of Cantor Amanda, the MazelTones will lead 2-3 musical pieces during each Family Shabbat service, once a month. Upcoming rehearsal dates include September 17, October 15, and October 29.  We will have lunch in the Temple House ( please send your child with a bag lunch) followed by a rehearsal in the Sanctuary. Our first Family Shabbat service will be October 6 and the next Family Shabbat service will be November 3. If your child is unsure, please encourage him/her to give a rehearsal a try to see if s/he would like to continue to participate. Tashlich is a ritual that many Jews observe during Rosh Hashanah. "Tashlich" means "casting off" in Hebrew and involves symbolically casting off the sins of the previous year by tossing pieces of bread or another food into a body of flowing water.   Don't forget to bring a picnic dinner for your family and a dessert to share.

Enrich your High Holy Days by Volunteering
We can not have the High Holy Days without your help! We are looking for volunteers at each service to help with the following: Greeting, Ticket Checking, Ushering, and Handing Out Prayer Books! We need about 10 volunteers per service and volunteers need to arrive one hour before the service they are helping with. Please e-mail us at admin@templesanjose.org with which services you may be available to help with. *NEW THIS YEAR: we need volunteers to help with Break the Fast.  Let us know if you would like to help set up the food, or help with clean up after.
