Rabbi's Message
by Rabbi David Komerofsky

"The synagogue is the sanctuary of Israel. It was born out of Israel's longing for the living God. It has been to Israel throughout our endless wanderings a visible token of the presence of God in the midst of the people. It has shed a beauty that is the beauty of holiness and has ever stood on the high places as the champion of justice and brotherhood and peace. It is Israel's sublime gift to the world. Its truths are true for all people, its love is a love for all men and women, its God is the God of all humanity, even as was prophesied of old, `My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.' Come then, you who inherit and you who share the fellowship of Israel, you who hunger for righteousness, you who seek the Lord of Hosts, come and together let us lift up our hearts in worship." (Union Prayer Book)

A synagogue (or temple) fulfills three equally important roles:
  • It is a Beit Knesset – a house of gathering.
  • It is a Beit Midrash – a house of learning.
  • It is a Beit T’filah – a house of prayer.

Now two years into the pandemic, as we reflect on all that has been lost and the many ways in which we have adapted, I think about these roles of our temple. We have been able to fulfill these functions in different ways at different times. I do so look forward to the day when we will be able to do even more, in person, to enrich the lives of our members and community.

Until then, we persevere, and we make accommodations. Always we keep front of mind the need to gather, to learn, and to pray. We do good work locally and worldwide, we make positive impacts on the lives of all we reach, and we seek to make real the visions of the prophets of Israel.

However and whenever you choose to participate, your congregation remains a sanctuary of Israel.

Cooking with Kids
by Julie Zorn

The benefits of cooking with young people have long been revered as an enjoyable and successful means of hands-on experiential learning. Cooking can encompass a wide range of lessons in science, world cultures and mathematics just to name a few. It also encourages cognitive development such as problem solving, fine motor skills with cutting, chopping, pouring, and spreading and with hand-eye coordination, as well.
In Jewish life, cooking with our youth also ensures that our recipes and traditions are handed down for the next generations to come. Not only are we sharing our personal family histories with food, but we are sharing the food of our people, sharing the food from the land of Israel mentioned in the Torah and learning the mitzvot and laws with how we approach and handle food. All of these lessons are meaningful and important, and it is essential that we provide these quality educational experiences for our children.
There are steps we can take to ensure our children are getting the most out of a cooking experience. Some tips are (1) preparing a recipe chart with step-by-step photos for children to follow, (2) allow children to smell and taste any ingredients in their raw form when possible, (3) read the recipe out loud and discuss the steps as you go along, (4) have tools, equipment and food prepped and ready to go, (5) include children in the cleanup process.
Celebrity Jewish chef and author, Jamie Geller, provides a list of age-appropriate cooking tasks for children on her website www.jamiegeller.com, which is a great resource of recipes, menus, tips and all things pertaining to Jewish cooking. She suggests the following tasks to engage children in the kitchen.
1. Whisking & Mixing. Kids can shake salad dressings or marinades in a container or even whisk the ingredients together in a bowl.
2. Measuring. Have your kids follow measurements from a cookbook or your instructions.
3. Peeling. Peeling fruits and vegetables is an easy enough task and is helpful as well.
4. Slicing. Older kids can be trained to use a knife properly and have the ability to be real-deal sous chefs in the kitchen. There are specialty sets designed for very young kids that aid in getting children safely trained in slicing and chopping skills.
5. Washing the dishes. Younger kids (especially if you get generous with the dish soap) LOVE washing dishes.
Regardless of which task or tasks your children participate in, one of the best perks of cooking with kids is that it is a time to bond and talk and share with them. These are the experiences young people remember, and the lessons with their loved ones that come from the kitchen are lessons that will stay with them throughout their lives.

Social Action Month of Giving

For the month of February, the social action committee will collect items for the Family Living Center in Massillon. The Family Living Center is a homeless shelter for families, single mothers and fathers, couples and unaccompanied women. They supply more than just a roof over their heads. A wide range of supportive services are part of the program. Food, clothing, counseling, tutoring, job training, employment assistance are just a few.

Their immediate needs include pillows, full size blankets, twin and full size sheets, towels, brooms and dust pans. We would also like to collect personal items, soaps, shampoo, shaving cream, etc., along with baby items, cleaning supplies and non-perishable food items. There is no oven or stove, therefore all items should be microwavable or “ready to eat”. A few suggestions include cereals, cereal bars, granola bars, pop-tarts, jelly, peanut butter, juice boxes, spaghettiOs, lunchables, ramen noodles, tuna, and any healthy snack.

Thank you for your continued generosity supporting the Month of Giving. Please contact anyone on the Social Action committee if you have any questions. All donations should be dropped off at the Temple office.

Thank you,
The social action committee: Joan Ortman, Paulette Karelitz, Sandy Adland and Anita Porter
