Rabbi's Message
by Rabbi David Komerofsky

And Ruth replied, “Do not urge me to leave you, to turn back and not follow you. For wherever you go, I will go; wherever you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God. (Ruth 1:16)

There are two ways to become Jewish, just as there are two ways to become a United States citizen – by accident or on purpose. Those who are Jewish by accident are born to Jewish parents or experience the process of gerut as children with parent(s), while those who are Jewish on purpose choose to follow the path of the Biblical Ruth and join the Jewish people with intention as adults.

This month we celebrate Shavuot and the receiving of the Torah, and as part of the observance we read the Book of Ruth. In the connection between Ruth’s journey and the acceptance of Torah as a way of life we remember that being Jewish means doing as Ruth did, actively choosing to cling to the Jewish people and join our fates with Jews around the world and around the corner.

Our Reform congregation is quite typical in that a good number of our members were not born Jewish. Many have become Jewish, and others are part of Jewish families but do not identify as Jewish themselves. Some practice other religions, or no religion at all. Our diversity is a strength in that we bring together many points of view as we struggle to interpret and apply ancient ideas and traditions in modern contexts.

As we prepare to accept Torah anew on Shavuot, whether we are Jewish by accident, on purpose, or not (yet) Jewish at all – we are called to hold fast to each other in pursuit of the justice and compassion that is at the heart of Judaism.

Ruth and her mother-in-law Naomi found strength and comfort sharing their path, and that path is open to us, as well. Doubly blessed as Jews and Americans, we ought not take either for granted. Both demand thoughtful commitment and a dedication to progressive change. Being purposely Jewish and American is a gift we ought not to waste and cannot afford to lose.

Join Us for Sunday Funday
by Julie Zorn

Summertime is here, and though Chadash is closed at the moment for the season, we recognize that Chadash is not only about lesson plans and holiday celebrations. Rather, it is our goal to create an environment that fosters life-long friendships in addition to all the Jewish learning that takes place.   For many of our students, the time spent at Chadash, is the only opportunity to know and be around other Jewish youth.

On July 31st, Chadash will host a mid-summer get together that we are calling Sunday Funday. Last summer, the program was hosted by Temple Israel, and this year, we would like to encourage all youth from the Canton Jewish community to come and join us just to simply hang out, and as the name suggests, have fun.

We have once again chosen Veteran’s Park in Plain Township as our location. Our time together will include Splash Park time (Don’t forget your bathing suits, towels and sunscreen), playground time, story time with Rabbi Komerofsky, crafts and a snack. The pavilion is reserved for a comfortable shaded spot to enjoy our time together.

Please come join us, as when summertime hits, Chadash friends miss each other. We hope our family Sunday Funday in Veteran’s Park will offer us the opportunity to come together and once again connect and share some happy moments together. Until then, happiest summer wishes to all. We looking forward to reuniting!

The Caring Community of Temple Israel is happy to announce the first annual Mitzvah Day. It will take place on Sunday, June 12, 2022 from 1-4 pm. Mitzvah givers of all ages are welcome to help, but those under 13 years old require parental supervision. We will come together as a community to work around Beit Ha'am with both indoor and outdoor opportunities for people of all capabilities. We will be cooking soups and baking challah for those that are ill, as well completing small projects to help our community or to assist those in need.

Projects we will be doing include:

  • Cleaning up Northlawn cemetery plots of Temple members- overgrown vegetation, cleaning stones, etc.
  • Preparing items to freeze and deliver to members who are ill:
  • Preparing soup and matzoh balls, and packaging in containers
  • Preparing challah in the morning for 1 hour
  • Braiding and baking challah
  • Organizing books in the library for Chadash usage
  • Helping out a community member at their home - inside or yard work

Please note:

  • We ask that people bring their own lawn care supplies, sunscreen and hats (if they have them)
  • We will supply bottled water
  • We will all meet at Beit Ha'am at 1:00 p.m. for a welcome and introduction
  • We will all meet back at Beit Ha’am at 3:30 p.m. for cookies and conversation
