Rabbi's Message

by Rabbi David Komerofsky

Thanksgiving is not a specifically Jewish holiday, but it could be. It has the major elements – designated foods, a fascinating story and a family meal. What’s more, because it does not fall on Shabbat or any other Jewish holiday, the halachic restrictions are absent so we can travel and not have to fuss about turning the oven on and off. Such a blessing!

More than those elements, though, it is very Jewish to give thanks. We regularly offer the prayer “Modim Anachnu Lach,” acknowledging our God who is the God of our ancestors, “for our lives which are in Your hand, for our souls which are in Your care, for Your miracles that we experience every day and for Your wondrous deeds and favors at every time of day: evening, morning and noon” (Mishkan T'filah: A Reform Siddur). A life lived with gratitude ensures that we do not take for granted the gifts we are given. This is the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday we will celebrate on November 23.

Gratitude should also be our sentiment as we observe Veterans Day on November 11. In addition to the divine blessings we enjoy, we are grateful for the sacrifices that veterans of an all-volunteer military make every day. Veterans Day reminds us, as well, that until very recently our military was not all-volunteer. In dedicating a day to honor the service of the volunteer and the conscript alike, we focus our attention on how different our nation would be if we were not defended in the way we are by a cross-section of our citizenry and population. Temple Israel will honor veterans at our Shabbat evening service on Friday, November 10. All are welcome.

The skies might be turning gray, the sun is setting earlier, and the air is chillier than it was a few weeks ago. But November gives us two reminders that we ought to live with gratitude for all that is ours.

As President Lincoln wrote in his Thanksgiving proclamation in 1864:

It has pleased Almighty God to prolong our national life another year, defending us with His guardian care against unfriendly designs from abroad and vouchsafing to us in His mercy many and signal victories over the enemy, who is of our own household. It has also pleased our Heavenly Father to favor as well our citizens in their homes as our soldiers in their camps and our sailors on the rivers and seas with unusual health. He has largely augmented our free population by emancipation and by immigration, while He has opened to us new sources of wealth and has crowned the labor of our workingmen in every department of industry with abundant rewards. Moreover, He has been pleased to animate and inspire our minds and hearts with fortitude, courage, and resolution sufficient for the great trial of civil war into which we have been brought by our adherence as a nation to the cause of freedom and humanity, and to afford to us reasonable hopes of an ultimate and happy deliverance from all our dangers and afflictions:

Now, therefore, I, Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States, do hereby appoint and set apart the last Thursday in November next as a day which I desire to be observed by all my fellow-citizens, wherever they may then be, as a day of thanksgiving and praise to Almighty God, the beneficent Creator and Ruler of the Universe. And I do further recommend to my fellow-citizens aforesaid that on that occasion they do reverently humble themselves in the dust and from thence offer up penitent and fervent prayers and supplications to the Great Disposer of Events for a return of the inestimable blessings of peace, union, and harmony throughout the land which it has pleased Him to assign as a dwelling place for ourselves and for our posterity throughout all generations.

 Gratitude and Consecration

by Julie Zorn

It’s November and the time of year that most people tend to think about the things and people in their lives that they are most grateful for. As Thanksgiving approaches, we are reminded of the commandment of hakarat hatov or recognizing the good in all things, and for Chadash, our American based holiday can open the doors of conversation tied to this topic.

This school year, we have a lot to be grateful for, and it is exciting and wonderful to see a new class of consecrants come to the bimah on Sunday morning, November 12th at 11:00 am. During the short ceremony, students will recite the Sh’ma and receive a blessing from Temple Israel and Shaaray Torah clergy as they symbolically formalize the beginning of their Jewish education.

The lesson of our Jewish education is something to be held dear and to be grateful for, as it is a lesson that can follow us for years into our adult lives. When we think about the times and places in our world when Jews have not had the freedom to practice our monotheistic belief, teaching our children to carry on these traditions and rituals is a true mitzvah.

As they receive their little Torahs with the same excitement that comes from opening a pile of birthday presents, we know that in time, their gratitude for the stories that are inside that tiny scroll will grow and become so much more meaningful with every lifecycle event as they move forward.

Mazal Tov to 2023/5784 consecration class and their families. We are not only grateful for the Jewish education that we get to share with you, but we are so grateful for each of you individually, as well. You make our school a community, and there is nothing better.
