President’s Reflections
by Shelley Schweitzer
A sure sign of Fall is the coming of the High Holy Days. While school may have already begun, since childhood, I have marked the “real end of Summer” as the Erev Rosh Hashanah service. The arrival of Rosh Hashana signals the return to a more robust work routine, earlier sunsets, and fewer evenings on the screened porch.
Even with that, I love this time of year -- the sights and smells; the order and rhythm of the Jewish Holy Day Season. For me, there is something comforting about the “sameness” of the observance. How will that work, I wonder, in a year when nothing appears to be the same?
No question, many of you, like me, are mourning the loss of greeting each other as we arrive for worship; of seeing the family members who “come home” for the holidays and who come together to break bread and watch the generations mix and mingle. Like me, many of you will profoundly feel the loss when we are not physically together, moving between times of quiet reflection and the cacophony of greetings that permeate the public spaces.
I acknowledge the loss and suggest that we also have much and many for which to be grateful. Rabbi Komerofsky has spent much of his first few months talking to congregants about what is important to them in order to make this High Holy Day observance meaningful. With the additional guidance of our Rabbis emereti, our Board of Trustees and a task force of congregants who have provided perspective and recommendations, we will share our annual journey of reflection and beginnings.
While we will experience our High Holy Day worship in new ways this year; much will be familiar. We will still hear the voices and melodies to which we are accustomed. We will hear words of wisdom and inspiration from our rabbi. The sound of the shofar will ring through the air. There will be opportunities to study together and for families to worship at services geared toward our youngest members. We will remember at our Yizkor service, and we will hear the haunting melody of the Kol Nidre prayer. We will be together in community because we are a family.
Just as we did last Spring when we came to the realization that Passover was going to be even more different than any other night, we are adjusting to the realities of a Covid 19 High Holy Day season. And just as we learned from our distanced Passovers and other times of observance and celebration these many months, we will find innovative and meaningful ways to mark this time and remain connected.
From our home to yours, l'shana tova umetukah tikatevu – a good and sweet year. May you be inscribed for blessing in the book of life.

With Appreciation…
Our sages believed that those who labored on behalf of their community were working to sustain that which their ancestors had created. They also held the contributions made by these community leaders would endure long into the future and that their accomplishments were worthy of recognition.
Each High Holy Day Season, our congregation takes a moment to recognize Temple members who lead our congregation and our community, and those who have been instrumental in bringing us to this season in the past. While there are no bima guests this year, we still want to take a moment to express our appreciation.
