Everyone is invited to join us as Sabrina leads the discussion of Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon. This book starts with the escape of Joe Kavalier from Nazi occupied Prague hidden in a coffin he shares with the golem of Prague. The story continues on to NYC where Joe and his cousin start writing adventure stories and comic books, featuring the Escapist, an anti-Fascist superhero. Combining magic, comic books, Jewish mysticism and escape artists, it is not to be missed.

What Was Once Lost: The Fight for Holocaust Restitution

As the Nazis attacked and occupied countries across Europe, they looted cultural and religious items and pilfered property from Jewish communities. By the end of the war, the Reich had carried out one of the greatest mass thefts in human history. Much of this stolen property was trapped behind the Iron Curtain, out of reach to those who sought to restore it to Jewish survivors and their heirs. The World Jewish Restitution Organization (WJRO) was founded in 1992 to pursue restitution of these materials, as many former communist countries have yet to return this property to its original owners or their heirs, or to offer compensation for these losses. Mark Weitzman, chief operating officer of the WJRO, joins us to discuss the ongoing fight for Holocaust restitution in Central and Eastern Europe and his work to make this happen through advocacy and negotiation.

Helping Israel

1.     Friends of Israel Defense Forces (www.FIDF.org). This is an organization that is non-political and non-military organization that provides for well being of the soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces, veterans and family members. Established in 1981 by a group of Holocaust survivors, FIDF is a 501c3 not-for-profit corporation that operates 26 regional offices in the United States with headquarters in New York City.

2.     American Friends of Magen David Adom (www.afmda.org), is Israel's national emergency medicaldisasterambulance and blood bank service to everyone in Israel.

3.     The American Jewish Committee (www.ajc.org), is the global advocacy organization for the Jewish people.

There is a nationwide online reporting system for threats or suspicious activity related to Jewish organizations or communities.

Once a report is made, security agents determine the urgency and, if necessary, work with the FBI or other law enforcement partners.

The information from the reports can also be used to keep better data on incidents, learn who is behind the threats, and track cases across communities.

People can use their computers, tablets or cell phones to fill out the reports.
