Please complete the Adjudicator Feedback Form if you have participated in festivals. Feedback will be accepted only from an MSVMA member who was present in the room during adjudication.

MSVMA has introduced a Rubric Reflection Sheet to support a growth-mindset culture for members and students alike. We are hoping that this short handout will give you the tools to thoughtfully read through your rubrics. The front page gives you a starting point to reflect on your own performance. You will find a reproducible worksheet on the back, which includes discussion questions, if you would like to use it with your students.

You can find the reflection sheet as well as other information and documents on the District Choral Festival page of the website.

MSVMA offers recognition plaques to choirs receiving Excellent ratings at District and State Choral Festivals. Orders may be submitted from February 1 to June 1 via the Plaque Order Form on the website.

To be considered for Choral/Ensemble & Sight Reading adjudication assignments, candidates must first attend an Adjudication Conference within the past three years.

Candidate must also register for an attend an Inservice day held during specified MSVMA festivals. These learning opportunities will enable candidates to demonstrate their ability to relate to students and teachers in a positive, age-appropriate, and musically accurate manner through written and oral comments.

Lunar New Year Concert Highlights Zheng and Qin Traditions

The Michigan State University College of Music celebrates the Lunar New Year with a special concert on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. in Cook Recital Hall, featuring guest artist Dr. Haiqiong Deng, a leading performer of the zheng and qin, two ancient Chinese string instruments. Now in its fifth year, the annual Lunar New Year Celebration Concert is part of the Artist-Faculty and Guest Recital Series, sponsored by WKAR.

Deng’s program, Nature, Music, and Convergence, explores the expressive traditions of these instruments through a combination of solo and chamber works. The concert features Moon Phase, a concerto by Sun Yue written for Deng and performed with a chamber ensemble of MSU student musicians on flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and percussion. The program also includes solo works for the traditional 21-string guzheng. Deng will also share insight into the instruments’ sound, history, and cultural context.

“This annual concert has become a unique and creative addition to our season,” said Yvonne Lam, associate professor of violin and director of the Lunar New Year Celebration Concert. “By including student chamber musicians on the program, it gives them the opportunity to perform in a culturally rich musical setting while offering audiences the chance to experience musical traditions that are rarely heard live. It’s also a meaningful way for all of us to learn from an artist who brings deep knowledge and perspective to the performance.”

Deng is widely recognized for her work preserving and presenting Chinese musical traditions and is a recipient of the 2017 Florida Folk Heritage Award, which honors artists who have made significant contributions to cultural heritage.

Following the performance, audiences are invited to a casual post-concert gathering with refreshments.

The Lunar New Year Celebration Concert is generously sponsored by Jim Forger and Deborah Moriarty, with additional support from WKAR, sponsor of the Artist-Faculty and Guest Recital Series.

General admission tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for seniors (60+), and free for students with ID and anyone under 18 (ticket still required). Tickets are available at the door, online at music.msu.edu/events, or by calling (517) 353-5340; tickets purchased online or by phone include a $1.50 processing fee.

If you would like to submit a story or photos to Tempo!, please email kathybalch@msvma.org. MSVMA also welcomes information about position openings, employment opportunities, and performance and audition notices.
