Tempting Tidbits - January 28, 2020
A Note From Karen

As promised, Knitting Temptations continues to add exciting new opportunities to our 2020 calendar! While the Ohio winter slugs its way to spring, we will help you focus on new skills, techniques and projects.

Last week, we introduced our first Gift Along (GAL) project.  Twistmas ,”  by Espace Tricot, is a quick and easy hat pattern to jump start the additions to your GAL trunk of gifts.

Upcoming opportunities include a “hands-on” color workshop with Mandy Root-Thompson and the first Knitting Temptations' 12-week Sweater Camp .

Please continue to forward you suggestions. Knitting Temptations welcomes your input!

PORTUGUESE STYLE OF KNITTING
Lynn’s Lovely Beret

Class Type: technique
Class Length: 3 hours
Target Student: beginner and intermediate
Fee: $55.00 (includes pattern and pin)
Class size limit: 20 - there are still a few spots open

Key Topics and Concepts Covered: students will learn how to knit, purl, increases, decreases and how to bind off Portuguese style.

Skills Required: Cast On, Knit, Purl, Bind Off.

Supplies:
For technique portion:
Yarn: Worsted Weight yarn in light color
Needles of preference sizes in US 6 (4.0mm) or US 7 (4.5mm)

For Project:
Any yarn that gives 19 stitches and 26.5 rows = 4 inches
Needles: US 5 (3.75mm) 16” circular needles and US 9 (5.5mm) 16" circular needles
and DPNs
3 buttons for decoration.

Students will learn a different way to knit. It is not the German or English method. The yarn is fed and tensioned around the neck (or knitting pin), leaving hands free to hold needles. This method is much easier on the hands. Because it is fast and ergonomic. it takes less maneuvering of needles to accomplish the work.
SWEATER CAMP

Wednesdays, March 11-May 13
2-4pm and 6-8pm
Fee: $75.00

Join Linda & Karen as they kick off the first Sweater Camp at Knitting Temptations.
Sweater Camp is an opportunity for knitters to work together on the same project while receiving guidance from staff and support from other participants. Our first sweater project is Andrea Mowry’s popular pattern, The Weekender . The first session is Wednesday, March 11 and continues through Wednesday, May 13. Groups will meet from 2-4pm and 6-8pm.
To determine appropriate pattern size, staff members will take the necessary measurements. They will help participants choose from a large selection of yarn and provide directions for knitting gauge swatches.
At the weekly gatherings, knitters will learn “tips and tricks” to track their progress, to prevent and fix mistakes and optional techniques for achieving “full fashion” garments.
KALEIDOSCOPE OF COLOR

March 28
10am-1pm
Class fee: $75

Join Mandy Root-Thompson on a journey through a Kaleidoscope of Color!

Mandy is presenting a fun and informative 3-hour workshop on color in knitting and crochet projects. Students will gain a better understanding of how to choose excellent color combinations. They will use a color wheel for selecting color schemes, warm and cool colors and neutrals (yes, neutrals are colors, too!).

Color theory may seem complicated and intimidating. However, understanding a few basic concepts will help you select yarns for a variety of color schemes. Don’t plan on sitting for a long lecture! Mandy’s hands-on method of teaching will have you up and moving around the shop finding your perfect colors. Students will receive a color wheel and booklet with class notes for future reference.

Mandy (a novice crocheter) is a medical illustrator and an instructor at the Columbus College of Art and Design.

Students need to bring at least one pattern requiring 3 or more colors that they want to knit or crochet.
GIFT-A-LONG (GAL)

Do you forget, procrastinate or just can’t finish the project that you started for a birthday, new baby or holiday gift? We have a fun solution!

Join us on Tuesday, February 5 from 6-8pm, to kick off an 11 month Gift Along (GAL). Our GAL will feature small projects that make wonderful gifts. Carefully curated free and paid patterns will allow prime use of all yarn weights and be appropriate for all levels of knitting and crochet expertise. Participants will have items ready for gifting throughout the year or by the end of the year, have a treasure trove of gifts ready for the holidays.

Can’t join us on Tuesdays? Just keep an eye on Tempting Tidbits for suggestions and pattern links.
Twistmas , by Espace Tricot, is an easy hat pattern featuring a twisted rib stitch pattern. This simple stitch creates an interesting texture while allowing beautiful yarns to take center stage. The original pattern is knit with two strands of fingering weight yarn and one strand of a lace weight mohair blend - all held together. However it is possible to eliminate the mohair. Also, knitters will find additional instructions for a “faded” version.
