Spotlight on Kimala Rein

Kimala joined A Shared Vision in 2017 as an Early-Intervention Teacher of the Visually Impaired, Orientation and Mobility Specialist and Certified Infant Massage Instructor. She divides her time between Anchorage, AK, and Grand Junction, CO, where she serves A Shared Vision’s families on the Western Slope. Raised on a cotton farm in southern Arizona, Kimala knows how isolation and the lack of services affect rural families. “Access to services shouldn’t be limited to where you’re born, explains Kimala.  She prefers early intervention vision services because she likes helping parents build a foundation for their child to succeed in school-based activities and to increase their confidence in raising a child with special needs. “Everything I do in early intervention is about finding shared joy in play because shared joy and bonding underlie all relationships.”    READ MORE

10 Sensory Experiences to Do This Summer Children with blindness and visual impairments learn best from real, hands-on experiences within the context of familiar routines and outings. With warmer weather, it’s time to get outside and help your child become more in tune with all their senses.   When you’re out exploring a park or playground, use your senses to experience the surroundings -- the smell of the grass, the rough tree bark, the squeaky swing and the snack you brought that day. Narrating your day in the park out loud engages your child in the experience and it helps them attach meaning to objects when sight isn’t available. Here are our ten favorite sensory experiences to do this time of year.  DOWNLOAD OUR SENSORY GUIDE Walk barefoot in the grass. Feel the wind on your face when swinging. Listen for birds. Lick a popsicle. Pick strawberries and eat them. Stand in the rain and stomp in puddles. Go fast and slow in a stroller or wheelchair. View a Colorado sunset. Drink fresh lemonade. Talk about body parts as you apply sunscreen.

Engage Your Senses! Join our teachers in Greeley, Northglenn and Sterling, CO, for a nature walk and make an experience book. We’ll discuss simple strategies to help a child who’s visually impaired prepare for outings and engage in the environment using all the senses. The event is free.  Siblings and other providers are welcome, too.
