#1 Black Panther Party Children's Liberation School

Black Panther Party (of New Jersey). ALL POWER TO THE PEOPLE. Liberation School Promotional Flyer. Black Panther Party, Publisher. No place or date (New Brunswick, NJ: 1970). Single sheet, 8 ½ by 11 inches. A flyer promoting the start of a liberation school on March 14th at the Black Community Information Center at 7 Church Street. The school would teach youth about class struggle. The bottom of the flyer cites point #5 from the Black Panther Party. The Black Panther Party sought to establish liberation schools to educate Black youth on class struggle and the revolutionary principles of the Black Panther Party. About a dozen schools were eventually opened, the first in Berkeley in June, 1969. All were short-lived due to police and government interference. GOOD condition. Some browning along the edges. A few small tears. Minor wrinkling. $200.00

#2 Student Protests, Higher Education at Columbia/Harvard?

No artist. “To Carry Out Universal Education…” Protest Poster. No publisher, place or date. Presumed late 1960s. Single sheet, thick paper stock. 25 by 19 inches. Perhaps produced via a block ink pressing. Thick ink used to produce the imagery. A protest poster depicting a young man holding a book and a rifle, dressed in paramilitary style garb. With the phrase “To carry out universal education…” Not a massed produced poster. Based on provenance, this may have been created for student protests either at Columbia University or Harvard University, in the mid to late 1960s. The former owner attended both schools, and based on the underground newspapers and leaflets in their collection, was at the very least, interested in the social movements and activism of the late 1960s. GOOD condition. Center vertical fold crease present, along with five horizontal fold creases (originally stored folded). Minor toning and soiling. Light bumping along the extremities. $375.00

#3 LGBTQ+ Filmmakers 1998 Transcript

The Lavender Screen: Queer Filmmakers Roland Tec, Shoshana Rosenfield, Stacey Foiles. OutWrite ’98. The 7th National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered Writers’ Conference. Audio Cassette Tape recorded transcript. Cambridge Transcriptions, Producer. No place or date, perhaps Cambridge, MA: 1998. Cassette tape in plastic jewel case. This appears to be an audio “transcription” of a talk with three queer filmmakers: Roland Tec, Shoshana Rosenfield and Stacey Foiles. This was presumably part of the 1998 OutWrite Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered Writers’ Conference held in Boston. OutWrite started in San Francisco in 1990, moved to Boston and ran until 1999. The conference provided the LGBTQ+ writers’ community with resources, connections and education focused on their experiences. OutWrite is credited with helping transform LGBTQ+ literature into a more encompassing genre, rather than something had primarily targeted a gay, white male audience. Tape in VERY GOOD or better condition, with no visible wear. Not play tested. Jewel case with a crack and piece missing along the top edge. $75.00r his suicide. This issue with “Pray For Niel Carothers,” by d.a. levy, as well as artwork and articles on various protests, counterculture topics and music. GOOD condition. Moderate browning to the paper. Some tearing along the spine, including a larger 1 ¼ inch tear. Minor soiling. $200.00

#4 Huey Newton Pro-Palestinians Piece

Newton, Huey. Statement on the Middle East. August 26, 1970. Black Panther Party, Presumed Publisher. No place: 1970. 2 sheets, 8 ½ by 11 inches, stapled together at the top left edge. 4 pages. Image of Huey Newton on page three. A statement by Huey Newton seeking to dispel some rumors, while perhaps engaging in innuendo of his own. Newton states that he believes Stokely Carmichael is an agent for the CIA, and disavows his actions in the name of the Black Panther Party (Stokely apparently leading a delegation of Black Panthers in Jordan). Huey Newton declares Carmichael to be acting on his own and for endorsing a vision of Black Power that adheres to capitalist practices that suppress Black people. While expressing allegiance with the people of Palestine, Newton asserts that the Black Panther Party is not anti-Semitic, and elucidates a complex position on the Palestinian and Israeli conflict. VERY GOOD. General toning. Minor fading to the text, presumable from poor reproduction technology. $300.00

#5 Adult Entertainment Ephemera

Doda, Carol (performer). The Condor. Show Business Promotional Booklet. No publisher, place or date. Presumed Condor Nightclub, San Francisco circa 1966. Roughly 11 ¾ by 9 inches when folded. Unfolds into 8 panels. A promotional work featuring famed topless dancer Carol Doda, and her work at the Condor nightclub in San Francisco. Four panels feature reproduced press clippings from 1965 about Doda’s show, with the other four panels primarily featuring photographs of Carol Doda performing. One photo depicts the Condor’s owners. Carol Doda popularized topless dancing in clubs, being one of the first noted performers to do so. She started her topless act in 1964. In 1969 she changed her act to be entirely nude, which she performed until it was outlawed in 1972. The Condor was opened in 1958, but became most popular once it started featuring Doda’s topless act. It was added to the San Francisco Business Legacy in 2022, recognized in part for pioneering topless and bottomless entertainment. GOOD condition. Moderate uneven toning, some soiling and a few small stains to the exterior. Faint vertical fold crease present. Minor creasing and wrinkling. Small chip at the center fore edge. $125.00

Photos of Black protests and other imagery present as well. No indication of maker. VERY GOOD condition. Minor wrinkling and creasing along the bottom edge. Very minor toning. Stored rolled, thus curled. $150.00

Proposals on the Role of Women in the Campaign (Massachusetts Delegation to the Democrat National Convention). Women’s Caucus of Massachusetts Delegation. Bal Harbour, FL: no date, presumed 1972. Single sheet, 8 ½ by 11 inches. Printed on a single side. A short piece of two resolutions regarding the role of women in the campaign of George McGovern during his run for president in 1972. The resolutions urge that women be incorporated into all levels of the national and state campaign staffs, on equal terms with others. Handwritten corrections to the text present. Undersigned (typed/printed) by Helen Rees, Monteal Yerby, Caroline Rees, June Tammi and Florence Outchcunis. #10 US Space Base Construction Photos in Greenland. ca 1951

Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base) Archive of 15 photos documenting the construction of the temporary Port of Thule. 8 by 10 inch glossy photos. No publisher, place or date. The photographs are loosely contained in a manila folder with the name of Colonel L.B. de Long typed on it. Affixed to the interior is a copy of a letter addressed to someone working for an insurance company, dated September 9, 1952. This letter suggests meeting a John Mead and Colonel L.B. deLong who apparently handled “lots of interesting towage and construction projects in Alaska, Greenland [etc.].” The photographs are primarily shots of the pier that would make the Port of Thule, being constructed, depicting metal pipes, platforms, etc., with some icebergs visible, as well as Dundas Mountain in the background. One shot depicts two former Navy vessels, which may have been used as temporary housing for workers. They are the USNS General Stuart Heintzelman and the USNS General A W Greely. One photo depicts a ship moored, and another depicts a ship just offshore. Pituffik Space Base (Thule Air Base) was originally built in 1951 and is the northernmost US military installation. It has gained more interest recently due to a US president’s inane obsession with Greenland. The website icyseas . org indicates that the Port of Thule is the northernmost deep water port in the world and was constructed in three weeks. It was meant to be a temporary port but is still in use today. It also appears from that website, that the pier depicted in these photos is sometimes referred to as the deLong Pier. These are from an executive of a very large international insurance firm (name of owner and firm withheld for privacy). The owner was a highly placed executive in an insurance company and travelled throughout the world extensively. They were active in politics through donations and fundraising, and it appears their family was friendly with the Roosevelts, especially Eleanor Roosevelt. The previous owner’s work for the insurance company led them to meet with various heads of state worldwide, including US government officials. Some of the people associated with this firm were also involved in World War II activities, including financing the Flying Tigers in China, as well as work for the OSS, using knowledge gained from insurance work. While we have not found any direct connection to intelligence work by this owner, their ties to those who did are strong. Photos in VERY GOOD condition with minor toning and general curling. $250.00
