Ogletree Deakins Attorneys Share Insights on Issues
for Small Businesses and Entrepreneurs
On December 4th, the Entrepreneur Support Providers Network gathered for their fourth and final workshop of 2019. Leading labor and employment law firm Ogletree Deakins is the 2019 sponsor for this series, and the host for this workshop.
The purpose of the Q4 workshop was to learn from the Ogletree Deakins experts on how to advise entrepreneurs and small business owners on legal issues around hiring employees. It featured an excellent presentation and discussion from a panel of attorneys including Michael Nail, Anne Cauble, and Lucas Asper. They shared the repercussions of not complying with I9 form requirements, the business immigration climate, and changes to employee status exemptions in the coming year—specifically, the increase in minimum salary for exempt employees.
The workshop was also an opportunity for the network to hear updates from each of the priority area work groups as they continue to pursue their goals. Looking forward in 2020, awareness will be the focus of this network’s efforts, making it easier for entrepreneurs to find an on-ramp into the ecosystem.
As always, the workshop served as a great connection point for the individuals and organizations in our region that support entrepreneurs and small businesses. The network will continue to meet quarterly over the next year.
Keys for Helping Seniors Remain in Their Homes Discussed
at TATT Senior Issues Workshop
On December 3 rd, Ten at the Top’s Upstate Senior Issues group hosted a public workshop to discuss the household needs of Upstate senior residents. Surveys repeatedly show a majority of seniors prefer to live at home, even if that means living alone. Seniors who choose to age in their homes can face unforeseen challenges with home maintenance, isolation from the community, and vulnerability to fraudulent scams.
The workshop featured a panel of industry experts moderated by James Bennett, Owner and General Manager of Upstate Home Care Solutions. Panelists were Dorinne Dubois, Homecare Manager, Appalachian Council of Governments; Vee Daniel, President & CEO, Better Business Bureau of the Upstate; Annette Cook, Director of Senior Adult Ministries, Christ Church Episcopal; and Dayle Stewart, Assistant Director, Rebuild Upstate.
The panelists discussed how their respective organizations work to support the independent living of their clients, from assisting with minor home repairs to providing scam prevention guidelines. Bennett and the panelists all stressed the importance of planning ahead as individuals or their relatives reach retirement age.
This was the fourth and final workshop in 2019, but plans are underway to continue with a series of Best Practice workshops in the new year.
