TennCare Redetermination Alert

TennCare Begins Eligibility Reviews on April 1st, 2023.

The TennCare redetermination process started on April 1st, 2023, and will span a rollout period of 12 months. This complicated process is projected to cause a loss of healthcare coverage for upward of 500,000 Tennesseans. The redetermination process has previously been disrupted and paused by the COVID-19 public health emergency. The original TennCare renewal process hold was supposed to end on July 15, 2022, which was extended when the Department of Health and Human Services renewed the public health emergency declaration.

Because more families than ever have been receiving TennCare coverage as a result of the pandemic, NASW-TN is urging our members to be aware that this redetermination period will be more disruptive than in the past. This complicated process is projected to cause a loss of coverage for upwards of 500,000 Tennesseans. This number has increased from an original estimation of 300,000.

The people most likely to be impacted by wrongful termination of coverage are people with disabilities, people with limited English, and people without notices such as homeless individuals and families. The most expected terminations are in months 6, 7, and 8. No month will exceed more than 1/9th of the TN population.

Renewal packets will be sent to households and not individuals. TennCare enrollees on SSI will be exempt from the process. If terminated there will be a 90-day grace period to submit information with no gaps in coverage. Renewal packets may be submitted by phone, fax, mail, in person, and online via the TennCare connect portal. If submitting by fax or mail it is suggested the receipts be kept.
