When we started our journey way back in October, Oak Point National Campground in the Shawnee National Forest was full. We luckily snagged the very last site. This time, Oak Point was utterly empty. Only one other tent camper occupied a site well away from us.
Our goal was to winterize V-Jer before reaching home. On 11/30, the clouldless 60º day gave us the perfect day to clean out the van, wash-and-wax V-Jer’s exterior, and winterize the water system. It took the whole day, but all of our equipment was organized and gleaming. We hooked up, set the alarm clock for 3:30 am, and drifted off to sleep around 9 pm.
In the early morning of 12/1, we pulled out of Oak Point at 3:49 am. The drive home was uneventful except that I had Google Maps set to “no tolls”. When we appoached Rockford, Illinois, Maps sent us on a crazy-ride that included one spot where a giant tree had fallen across the street, blocking the way.
Somehow, we were able to turn around even with V-Jer hooked up. I had to get out a paper map to assist Google Maps, as Maps insisted on bringing us back to that tree.
Our next goal, which we accomplished, was to arrive home before dark so we could put V-Jer away and unpack Saturn. As is our custom, we had thoroughly cleaned the house before we left. It is always wonderful to walk into a sparkling home after being away so long. Too bad it won’t stay that way for long.
So……….., this will be our final travelogue for this venture. Thanks for coming along. Stay tuned for the next one. Will it be Mexico??????
Have a wonderful holiday season.
