Tennis Team Tidbits
Who are these Victors?! The Academy's tennis team is on a roll this season with an undefeated team record after seven matches, including singles player Allison Rehl who is individually undefeated. Team members are Lauren Strobl, Hannah Lovejoy, Katie Lovejoy, Allison Rehl, Elayna Rehl, Dallas Bolen, and Neven Lather.
Coaches Jawn Smith and Amy Strobl are very pleased with the team's dedication, having begun practices in August even before classes began. Coach Strobl is particularly impressed with the students' behavior. "They're not just winning matches, they're exemplifying virtuous behavior on the court, being humble in victory and strong in defeat, and all the while showing good sportsmanship," said Strobl.
Congratulations to these Victors for a terrific season thus far!

Visit to the Special Collections Department at Marietta College
Last week our 7th and 8th grade students visited Marietta College's Special Collections Department where they spent time examining original letters written by Marie Antoinette, George Washington, and Benjamin Franklin. Many of our students remarked on the beauty of both the language and the script in these letters and were excited that they could read these carefully handwritten historical documents.

History or Social Studies?
|
Social studies encompasses many disciplines such as history, economics, political science, psychology, anthropology, geography, social science, sociology, archaeology, and others. Meanwhile, history is a specific discipline that is and can be classified by period, geographical location, etc.
The new discipline of social studies was introduced into American public schools around the turn of the 20th century. It was part of the progressive program to introduce students to a variety of disciplines rather than to study any particular one in depth. The classical movement has tended to eschew the teaching of comparatively shallow social studies instruction in favor of a much deeper, richer study of history. The replacement of history with social studies (in many public schools) has meant that students have often failed to learn about the great heroes and heroines of the past. In social studies the great figures of history become flat, pale, two-dimensional caricatures of life. As such, the student has no opportunity to emulate the virtue of St. Joan of Arc or to avoid the vice(s) of Benedict Arnold.
At VCA, our students are thrust into a years-long study of history to learn the story of not only man's achievements but also of his failures. It is a fascinating, complicated, sobering, and indispensable discipline that will inform our young people as they observe and participate in the world around them.

The Violins have Arrived!
This week we took delivery of a very large shipment of violins. Our music curriculum this year includes violin instruction for 3rd-6th grade students. We are terribly excited to begin this program which will dovetail nicely with our newly formed strings ensemble. Parents may have to endure a bit of screechy violin practice, but it will be well worth the initial auditory discomfort!
