CAPTAIN YOGI'S USELESS
BUT IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Hello Everybody!

Hope everyone’s summer has been a great one! I know the Parrot Heads have been busy! We started the summer off with the 1st Corn Hole Tournament being a success and raising over $600 for the National Parkinson’s Foundation! Hopefully, I can make it past the first round next year.  We then ended a great day with Tropical Soul in the evening! Next was Margaritaville Madness at Mother Ocean hosted by the Braasch’s and music by Kirk James Folk, and you guessed it... Tropical soul. Once the storms blew thru, it was a great evening with fun had by all!

What could be next?? Glad you asked! The 3rd Annual Jakie Invitational on August 20th which is gearing up to be a great event again with some great (and large) raffle prizes this year. Spots are filling up fast and hope to see as many of you as can be there!

As most of you know, our 20th Anniversary is fast approaching and we are in the planning stages for this gala event. We are looking for some volunteers outside of the board to join our committee and also looking for ideas from the members what they would like to see. We should have a date stored up by the August social.

Speaking of the August social, we will be at a new location in Harrisburg at The Roadhouse Café (formerly Rods Roadhouse) with Tropical Soul and weather pending may be an outside event on their patio. They are excited to have us so let’s make it a great showing and let them see what the Amish Parrot Heads are all about.

Last but not least, elections. We have several spots up for election this year, including yours truly and we are looking for some fresh members. It really doesn’t take a lot of time and we always can use a fresh perspective. The only way we can ‘Make The Amish Great Again’ is with your participation. Would you like to see something different, have ideas on how we can better the club, run for a position! We will be announcing open board positions at the Julys social

Hope everyone continues to have a great and safe summer!!

BACK IN THE TEQUILA TIMES

Back in the Tequila Times

May 2001, Dear DJ Jeff, My question for this month is what made Dennis decide to start playing guitar? His love of music or thinking it would be a great way to pick up chicks? Captain Lynn

Dear Lynn, I went to the Man himself for the answer, although given permission to edit his response to my heart’s content, one doesn’t mess with the words of a poet. Reprinted below is Dennis’s own response.

“Oh my! I’m going back here… I guess I’ve always been a big music fan. My older brothers and sisters were huge Beatles fans in the early sixties, so Beatles music was always playing around the house and although at that I was a bit too young to be a real fan on my own, the music and the excitement certainly had a impact on me. To this day, when I hear the count in to “I Saw Her Standing There” I still get the chills.

A few years later, when they were in their early teens, my brothers had a little garage band and I used to hang around and listen to them practice and wish I could play “House of the Rising Sun”, “Gloria” and “Hey Joe” just to name a few.  Once in awhile my younger brother and I would sneak downstairs when no one was around and pick up the instruments and plug in!  I usually played the drums, cause I didn’t have a clue how to play anything on guitar. It wasn’t until much later that I really thought seriously about the guitar though. When I was in my mid to late teens I was captivated by the singer songwriter explosion of the early seventies. I think the first 8 track (did He say 8 track)  ****insert here, if you don’t know what an 8 track is, goggle it***  That I actually bought was John Denver’s “Rocky Mountain High”. James Taylor, Cat Stevens, and Jim Croce all followed closely (JB came a bit later and before long, I wanted nothing more that to play the acoustic guitar and sing like they did. (Don’t be fooled here! This kid aren’t no dummy! I knew full well that playing the guitar also meant that beautiful, love starved women would be beating the door down just to hang out with me!!)

I went to Zeewitz Music in Park City at the ripe old age of twenty thinking that I was probably already too old to really do much with this guitar thing anyway, put a down payment on a beautiful Alvarez six string acoustic!  Two hundred and thirty dollars later, I took that blond beauty home.  I was proud as can be showing that guitar off to everyone I knew. I played that thing every waking moment and after six months I came to the stark realization that I could barely play anything, and I couldn’t sing a note.! Oh well some people never give up!!!

Twenty three years later that old Alvarez still looks pretty good and never sounded better. In fact it sits in the corner of my living room and I still play it all the time.

MOTM 2017 will be full of great music from all the Trop Rock artists you know and love. There are several first-time things like bands made up of many of the solo artists you see through time on the Trop Rock music scene. For over a year now we have been talking about the Girlz Rule Band coming to MOTM as a first! You have seen the trio…now check out a full-on band backing this group. Scott Kirby is coming with a brand new studio cd to release as we get to Key West. That set should rock as he brings in backing from several great artists. There are many things you may never get the chance to see again in Key West at MOTM 2017! Devon Allman is coming with his band. An evening with the son of the late great Gregg Allman will be something you won’t forget! There is a blank spot on the schedule for Saturday. I can tell you that the Nashville area code keeps coming up my caller id… We are cooking up something special for you and you won’t have to pay amphitheater prices to see this one….I will stop here for now! There are so many great sets of music playing at the Casa Marina for MOTM 2017! More to come in the weeks ahead!

WANT A ROOM AT THE CASA? WE HAVE A FEW THAT JUST RELEASED AND YOU SHOULD ACT FAST OR YOU WILL MISS THE CHANCE TO BOOK ONE!
We sold out the Casa Marina in two weeks this year but as always there are a few cancellations due to life getting in the way… If you can’t get one of the few that just released by the time you read this…we are collecting names to add to the wait list as some level of cancellations will always happen and we need to keep the hotel sold out! … If you can’t grab one of the few open Casa rooms and want to be on the wait list just follow the steps below…remember there is a Parrot Head discount at the Reach and you have a chance to move to the Casa if a cancellation happens:

The 2017 MOTM Wait List for the Casa Marina - Here are the 3 steps below:
  1. Register for Meeting of the Minds 2017.
REMEMBER YOU MUST BE REGISTERED FOR MEETING OF THE MINDS 2017 TO STAY AT THE CASA MARINA OR BE ON THE WAIT LIST FOR THE CASA.
  1. Book your room at the Reach Resort. While our awesome Parrot Head rate is only valid at the Casa Marina the Reach is offering a discount to our group this year. This Reach Resort rate will not be as low as the Casa rate but it is a booking discount. There are some Casa Marina cancellations every year so booking early will put you up the list as we do go in order to move people over as vacancy happens through the year. This can happen right up to the event so give the hotel your cell number not your home number for contact!

  1. Email our MOTM Director of Registration Rick Fyffe at rjfyffe1@ymail.com
Put in the title of your email "MOTM Casa Marina Wait List." Tell Rick you are booked at the Reach and registered for MOTM.  Rick will add you to the Casa Marina wait list in the order in which you contact him.
We have to fill the Casa Marina so we will work very hard to move everyone we can as cancellations occur. We will be working down the order in which you reply to Rick Fyffe. Sorry for any confusion but it is best to manage this list through Rick vs. contacting the hotel.
Here is the special link to the Reach Resort for our group discount – Again this is NOT the same rate as the Casa Marina. Simply copy and paste the URL below into your browser to access the exclusive rates available for this group:
The Call in link is: ZZPAR9   The Reach reservations line is: 305-296-5000.

Margaritaville Madness at Mother Ocean

WHAT A SUCCESS!!!!!

Thank You all for attending.  The day started with a Torrential downpour, then it cleared up and Kirk James Folk played some great 70's -80's Classic Rock, the food was awesome, the pool was a splash zone like no other, corn hole games were non stop, the music was amazing and was capped off with Heather Vidal and Dennis McCaughey "Tropical Soul Duo", playing their hearts out.  The Storm did not stop us and there was a solid 125 people there partying it up all night.  Look out for a future Backyard concert at Mother Ocean again soon.  Mother Ocean
