Have you seen this terrifying ice-fishing video?
From when a fisherman accidentally drags his buddy β and their shelter β across the ice after forgetting to unhook the flip-over from the back of the snowmobile before zipping back to pick up another friend on shore. π³
Sheesh β glad no one was hurt! That bloody-curdling "AAAAAAAGGGHHHH!" sounded like something out of a movie.
I'm actually kind of surprised it doesn't happen more often....

Tiny perch wins $20K prize in ice-fishing derby!
It only makes sense that the largest Ducks Unlimited event in the nation is actually a fishing derby π€π€£ called " Fishing for Ducks," which happened last Saturday on Mille Lacs Lake in MN.
Looks like it was a 0.58-lb perch that won the $20K 1st-place prize this year. Means that little bugger was worth $2,155.17 per ounce LOL. Amazing.
Full leaderboard posted here of the 222 registered fish (all perch) that ranged from 0.02 to 0.58 lbs. So what happened to Mille Lacs???
Well, I'm sure there were walleyes caught during the derby, but right now you'd only be able to bring in:
> ...1 walleye between 21-23" or 1 fish longer than 28". All other walleye must be immediately released [per the current regz].
There's LOADS of walleyes in "The Big Pond" right now flirting with that 20-21" line, but just under it. Makes it tough going to snag a weighable marble-eye during the derby.
Btw about a month back I had shared this image in TW wondering how in the heck they're able to drill the holes in the shape of the DU logo?!
I actually received a reply from TW reader Chad H. who provided a little insight:
> "I used to work for DU in the engineering department that serviced the upper Midwest, MN included. We would use our GPS equipment loaded with coordinates from a CAD or survey program that make up the shape of the duck head logo. I personally was never on site for the layout but have seen the drawings used for doing it. Same technology we use for staking the wetlands that are created or restored in the prairie as well!"
Now you/we know.... Thanks Chad!

Don't see that every day.... π¦¦
Only time I'd ever be glad something bites the spoon on a dropper rig instead of the little hook down below.
Okay, enough otter talk. For now.... π

When fish add insult to injury.... π€£

NoDak fishing guide Cody Roswick experienced a new level of defeat. Hooked what he presumed to be a walleye on his "super-glo chub" color Northland Forage Minnow Spoon, then lost it. Reeled in and had a half-digested perch on the hook lol:
I've seen some wild things on the interwebz, but that's another new one for me. Thanks for taking one for the team, Cody hahaha. π
How to tell it's time to call it a day on the water....
When even your electronics are telling you the bite isn't gonna happen β sent in from Chris Wanner on Insta:
LOL love that. Thx much, Chris!

Few highlights:
> ...35% more target separation over the existing system with sharper resolution, reduced noise and Garmin's clearest images.
> ...capable of identifying and separating targets as small as 14" at distances 100' from the boat so anglers can see exactly what they need to with improved stitching, reduced noise and fewer on-screen artifacts....
> ...3 unique vantage points with 1 mount that can be adjusted to fit...no tools required. Simply turn the transducer forward for a live look at what's out in front of the boat; point it down to see directly beneath the boat; or turn it sideways with the included Perspective Mode Mount to enable the 'top down' perspective mode to see a wide view of what's in front of the boat up to 50' away.
> With a free software update, the LVS34 transducer, sold separately, can be added to existing LiveScope System for customers who want to upgrade.
The new LiveScope System and the LiveScope LVS34 transducer are expected to be available in Mar for $1,699.99 and $1,199.99 MSRP respectively.
> As part of an ongoing study launched 2 yrs ago, the UT DWR is still asking anglers to report and release any tagged northern pike they catch in Utah Lake. And, because the invasive fish were placed in Utah Lake illegally, anglers must kill any northern pike they catch that don't have a tag.
> DWR biologists started tagging some of the northern pike in Utah Lake and its tributaries in Feb '20 as part of a study to learn more about the seasonal locations and movements of juvenile and adult pike in Utah Lake, the Provo River, Hobble Creek and the Spanish Fork River. The study is expected to run for at least 5 yrs (until '25).
On the north end of Lake Bemidji. Only 1,500 tickets sold for a chance at over $30K in cash + prizes. All proceeds will go to the BHS fishing team.

I might try to sneak up to fish it, and of course bring my burbot gear with for after....
Kayla Robinson's 11.4-lb lake trout took the top spot in this year's Great Meredith Rotary Ice Fishing Derby = a $15K payday! Believe Kayla is the first female to win in the derby's 42-yr history:
> Kayla: "I was really just messing around. I put a shiner and a worm on a hook and just sent it down and let the shiner do whatever it wanted to do, and the moment happened. First time I've ever really ice fished in my life!"
ο»Ώ
You just never know. Big congrats, Kayla!
While heading to an ice fishing tournament. Glad everyone was okay!

Spotted the submerged vehicle (in about 13') with his underwater camera. No word if he caught any fish off of it before calling the police....
At Casterline Pond.

What's π₯ on Target Walleye's YouTube π₯
This new AnglingBuzz video takes a look at 6 of us burbot-freakazoids π΅βπ«and how we each like to modify our baits for extra sound, glow, flash and scent to get a few more bites from those belly-draggers.
Some are simple...and some are as complex as drilling a hole in the top of a Rippin' Rap and adding #8 bird-shot to double the bait's weight. π
"All I knew is it was 10x heavier than anything I've ever pulled in in my 40 yrs of ice fishing."
> "When it took off the first time and I didn't know what it was...it did yank me towards the hole, and that's when I started screaming as loud as I could to my buddy, Dan, who was across the ice, that I'm going to need some help with this, whatever it is.
> "I'm pulling as hard as I could...never felt anything like it. I've caught some big fish. I saw it go by the hole, and I still didn't know what it was, I just thought it was a massive fish."
> Finally, after more than 10 mins of wrestling with the underwater creature, Poisant came face to face with what he estimates was a 20-30-lb otter.
Man, even if I were armed with one of those Rapala Fillet Gloves, I'm not sure I'd take a crack at unhooking that thing. π

My bud Jadyn Thomas iced himself a GillZilla that went 10.75" long x 12" girth! Even cooler is he got to watch it eat his jig + plastic combo. Said they were sightfishing 'em 10' down over 15' of ultra-clear water with his Elliott Rods "The Odyssey" aka 30" XF noodle. π₯ Congrats dude!
