Tesla STEM's Problem-Based Learning Internships are expanding. The University of Washington's Advanced Physics Lab hosted our STEM scholars who currently are working in our PBL Internship: Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicle....better known as the Urge to Submerge. Our T-STEM internship partner team (Steve Sergev -Mechanical and Ocean Engineer; Mark Roehrig - Electrical Engineer; and Don West - Geologist and Program Manager) are leading our students to conceive, design, build, test, and operate an ROV with the goal of participating in the regional competition this Spring, 2017. Our partner team and our students made their mark with the UW team. Read on......

High School Students and APL-UW Engineers Share ROV Designs A Sneak Peak at Next Gen Designers' Skills
by Pete Brodsky
Tesla STEM High School students visited APL-UW on 14 December 2016 to learn about the Laboratory's ocean research instruments and to pick our ocean engineers' brains about their school's latest ROV design. The school, located in Redmond, WA, is part of the Lake Washington School District.
I was the visit 'herd master' and one of four presenters - each explaining a different asset to the students. Trina Lichtendorf detailed the functions of Seaglider. Shima Abadi (Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at UW Bothell) overviewed the "Iver2" propeller-driven AUB. I highlighted the EM-APEX float, and Steve Kahle wrapped up the presentation illustrating the functions of a Blue Robotics ROV. Each instrument was on display in the Henderson Hall library and students were encouraged to approach and carefully investigate them. Great questions were asked and answered during all four presentations.
Our next stop was upstairs in the Round Table room. Tesla HS students are designing their own ROV for the upcoming "MATE" competition. They presented initial design concepts to Lab engineers and were eager for feedback, comments, and suggestions.
The critique was a thumbs up:
"Our impression of the students' design was highly favorable - they demonstrate a level of engineering competence and organization far beyond what we would expect at their age, especially considering that this is their first ROV project." - Pete Brodsky

WHAT IS GRAD NIGHT?
Grad Night is an all-night celebration that starts immediately following graduation. It is the last time students will be together as a class and is intended as a safe alternative to private parties. Students are whisked by bus to two separate private venues for a night they won't forget with tons of activities, dancing, entertainment, food and prizes. There are few events in a teen's life more important than graduation. Our students have worked hard to get where they are and deserve a special night.

Focus Day.... Sold out?
But you can still attend the Capitol Steps Rally and the Rotunda Briefing!
Yes, if you go to register for Focus Day on the Wa State PTA website it says "SOLD OUT"! That's great news.
But you can still attend without registering. People who do not register can still attend the main events:
The Rally at 10:30am
Briefing in the Capitol Rotunda at noon!
However, people who have not been able to register cannot, unfortunately, participate in the events in the Columbia Room or the Kids Activities due to space constraints.
People who have registered have access to the entire WA STATE PTA agenda, including activities in the Columbia Room and the Kids Activities.
Please do be discouraged from joining even if you have not registered. This will be an exciting and energy-filled day in Olympia. With so many different organizations in attendance, this will be a unique opportunity to experience a vibrant example of democracy in action
Don't Want to Drive or Park at Focus Day? Take the LWPTSA Council Bus!
LWPTSA Council has hired a FREE coach bus. Other districts are welcome, but priority will be given to Lake Washington School District PTSA Members.
Or, plan to carpool and make it a road trip with your friends and fellow advocates.

PTSA is here to help!
|
|
Tesla STEM PTSA believes that financial need shouldn't be a barrier to students fully participating in the Tesla STEM HS curriculum. To support that, the PTSA has partnered with the school counselors and Principal to provide scholarship funds to students in need.
Families who need help with fees and supplies are encouraged to contact their counselor at STEM with their requests.
Confidentiality of such requests is strictly maintained - requests are considered by the school and no one at PTSA knows the names of the requestors.
Please don't hesitate to contact the counselors, if PTSA can help.
