Test Anxiety Got You Down?
Join Poughkeepsie Public Library District's Coordinator of Central Library Services, Deborah Weltsch at the Help Your Library Score High Marks workshop to learn all about print and online testing  resources for your patrons!

This workshop is good for any library staff who works with the public. Let Deborah help you, help patrons who will be taking tests. Whether academic - from High School Equivalency, AP, SAT to graduate level and beyond-or career related. Discover tools to help folks prepare to take some of the more common Civil Service exams and other job tests.

The workshop will cover:
  • Where to find study guides and sample practice tests, including e-books
  • Weeding tips and collection-building resources to help clean up, and beef up, existing collections
  • Features in our JobNow! database that can be helpful for test-takers
  • Resources for job exploration and occupational testing.

MHLS Friends Support Group Meet-Up: Tuesday,  October 16 from 5:30-7:30pm at Highland Public  Library. This support group has been created as a forum  for library Friends to come together and share  information. The topic of this meet-up will focus on Public  Relations (PR) ideas and materials. At this workshop we will:
  • Talk about the challenges of and solutions to Getting the Word Out
  • Tweet Out: Attendees will share their #1 PR piece from the past 12 months (social media post, e-message, flyer, poster, postcard, etc.) Please bring a copy to show the group.
  • Tour of the new Highland Public Library

National Friends of Libraries Week October 21-27
This celebration offers a two-fold opportunity to celebrate Friends. Use the time to creatively promote your group in the community, to raise awareness, and to promote membership. This is also an excellent opportunity for your library and Board of Trustees to recognize the Friends for their help and support of the library. Explore ideas and resources:

Poughkeepsie Public Library District is celebrating  Library Card Sign-Up Month with a social media scavenger hunt!

Each Monday, the Library District will reveal, on its Facebook and Instagram feeds, a location in either the Town or City of Poughkeepsie where people can go and take a photo with their Poughkeepsie Public Library District card. By posting the picture on either Facebook or Instagram and tagging the Library with #PokLibNY and #PokLibraryCardMonth, each participant will be entered in a drawing for a Visa gift card.

New Ways to Supercharge Your Storytimes Webinar  October 9, 3:00-4:00pm. Whether you are new to  storytimes or a seasoned provider, Supercharged  Storytimes can deepen and enhance the great work you
already do.

Join Saroj Ghoting, Early Childhood Literacy Consultant, Curriculum Developer for Supercharged Storytimes for All and Betha Gutsche, WebJunction Programs Manager, to learn about the refreshed Supercharged Storytimes curriculum including the updated online self-paced course and the online facilitator training program. In this one hour overview you will learn about the following:
  • The updated online self-paced course: Beginning in October, anyone, anywhere, can get supercharged with the free self-paced course. If you're a self-starter, like to work at your own pace, or don't have the ability to attend instructor-led training, this is just right for you.
  • The online facilitator training: You can learn to guide your storytime provider peers to form a learning group by becoming a Supercharged Storytimes facilitator. You don't need to be familiar with the course content to be a leader who motivates and fosters connection for more powerful group learning. This four-week online training begins in November. Enrollment will open in September and close October 19.

Overview of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for Library Facilities Webinar  Friday, October 5 10:00-11:30am

In partnership with the Northeast ADA Center, MHLS offers this custom webinar for member libraries that will provide:
  • Overview of the ADA
    • ADA definition of "person with a disability"
    • Review of the 5 Titles of the ADA and how they are enforced
  • Focus on ADA Title II obligations for state/local government entities - including public libraries
    • Self-evaluation
    • Transition Planning
    • Review of Title II "Program Accessibility" requirements
  • Discuss ADA Priorities for physical accessibility
