Catholic Schools Week 2021
From Scotus Central Catholic President, Jeff Ohnoutka

Catholic Schools Week begins Jan. 31st and this year we definitely have reason to celebrate. Over the course of the last year, we have experienced the isolation and separation from each other brought on by the mitigation strategies to deal with Covid-19. We have spent way too much time looking at computer screens and less time in the presence of each other.

Thankfully, our Columbus Catholic School system has shown the resiliency necessary to combat all these things during the 20-21 school year. Throughout this school year, our staff and students have been committed to doing all the things necessary to stay in person. As we begin to start to feel a sense of normalcy in our lives, I hope that we never take for granted the extra efforts of this year.

Across the nation, you see many Catholic schools closing. This can be attributed to the pandemic but in many cases, it is caused by apathy and a lack of commitment to this important mission of our church. Our community has a history of supporting Catholic schools dating back to 1884. It is obvious to me that we support what we value. I am proud to live in a community that values Catholic education, and they ensure that it is available to all who desire it.

It may have been a challenging year, but it has once again proven that we are stronger together. I hope that you are proud of our Catholic schools!
Kosch and Ostdiek stop by Scotus, talk about seminary
2019 Scotus Central Catholic graduates Isaac Ostdiek and Caleb Kosch enjoyed their visit back home.
On January 13th, two familiar faces stopped by Scotus, 2019 Scotus Central Catholic graduates Isaac Ostdiek and Caleb Kosch are current seminarians at Saint John Vianney College Seminary at the University of St. Thomas.

They spoke to students about seminary life and growing in their faith. Seeing them discuss life in the seminary and life after high school was a highlight for many.

Theology teacher Tyler Linder was very grateful for their time to share their stories. "Several of our upperclassman remember those two walking the halls. It's always a blessing when our alumni comes back and visits us," Linder said.

Those little trips back home mean a lot to our staff and students. Thank you Isaac and Caleb for stopping by Scotus. Good luck in your faith-filled journey!

Winter Weather Closings Information

The arrival of February means the possibility of ice and snow and weather-related school closings. Scotus uses social media the local radio stations to announce any school closings due to the weather along with Civil Dispatch.

The earliest morning response is 5 am, unless the forecast was so threatening that closings could be announced the night before.

If weather necessitates that school closes during the day, all four Catholic schools will respond together. Mr. Ohnoutka will consult with the elementary principals before any dismissal is announced. A civil dispatch will be sent out.
Parents may pick up their student(s) or have them dismissed to drive home when there is threatening weather. Students are counted absent for missed time.

SEF16 Update

Members of the Shamrock Nation: your response to the SEF 16 fund drive has been wonderful, especially in light of the extraordinary times we are living in because of the virus. To date we have 710 individuals and businesses who have donated or pledged a total of $1,170,837. Thank you!

It has also been gratifying to receive first-time donations from 47 alumni and alumnae. We are now only about $104,000 short of the $1.275 million dollar goal to provide tuition assistance to every Scotus student for three school years, replace the floor in the Dowd Activity Center and make safety and energy efficiency improvements to our school. The campaign is not closed, in case you wish to participate—make your check payable to Scotus Central Catholic, or donate online through the school’s PayPal account HERE

Mark Your Calendars for the 40th annual Gala

The 40th annual Gala dinner/auction will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2021.  This is the school’s largest annual fundraiser and all proceeds are used to balance the annual budget and keep tuition expenses low for our school families. At the present time, the Gala will be offered as an in-person event at Scotus, although it is likely that fewer reservations will be available due to attendance restrictions with COVID-19.

Everyone, including guests who are attending the Gala and those who stay home, will have the opportunity to bid online for the silent and super silent auction items, purchase chances for the jewelry box drawing and participate in the fund-a-need donation.
And, in addition to the Gala Lottery, we will offer the new Gala Raffle. We hope to involve our student body in this raffle which will offer a first prize of groceries for a year ($125.00 Hy-Vee gift card per month for 12 months) and a 2nd prize of a $500.00 Scheels gift card. Students will also get to earn an incentive prize if they sell a ticket!

New this year, the State of Nebraska will allow everyone to purchase lottery and raffle tickets online using their debit card. To purchase lottery or raffle tickets online, use the donate button on the school’s web site and be sure to tell us how many tickets for each drawing you are purchasing! Tickets are also available at school and from any Gala committee member.

If you would like to participate by donating an item for the silent or oral auctions, volunteer to help, or if you wish to receive an invitation to attend please contact our co-chairs, vice-chairs or Janice Rosenquist in the Scotus development office: 402 564 7165 ext. 154 or [email protected].

Your involvement will be key to our event’s success and that’s why we urge you to mark your calendars today!
