VSCP Spotlight: Addison White

Meet Addison White! Addison is 14 years old, lives in Houston, TX , and has homeschooled since she was in the 5th grade. Her favorite subject is Science and she has a strong love for marine animals. Addison enjoys learning and that is very apparent with everything she has accomplished at such a young age! Because of her strong love for marine animals, she took marine zoology classes for two years with Next Level Homeschool and is currently taking science classes at Science World Discovery. Over the summer, she took a class called "Anatomy Cause of Death" in which her group dissected a canine to study anatomy and physiology and figure out the cause of death. Addison has also attended many camps including the Texas A&M Adventures in Marine Biology Sea Camp in Galveston, TX and the Minorities in Shark Science Marine Science Camp in Cedar Key, Florida where she was able to do things like shark fishing, shark tagging, orienteering, shark dissections and more! In her spare time she enjoys watching National Geographic's "Pop Goes The Vet with Dr. Joya", "Love and Vets", and "Critter Fixers Country Vets." She was even able to participate in the Houston Critter Fixers Vet for a Day program with the vets from the "Critter Fixers: Country Vets" and "The Vet Life" where they visited Rhonda Ranch in New Waverly, TX to give immunizations and castrate the calves. After visiting the ranch, Addison was able to continue working with the vets to learn some skills and the operations of the Cy-fair Animal Hospital in Cypress, TX.

She is currently the youngest member of an organization called Black in Marine Science and has had some amazing opportunities to connect with different members. They are even helping her to obtain her open-water scuba certification! This year, Addison was lucky enough to attend the annual AAZV Conference in Houston, TX with Dr. Michelle Davis after interviewing her for her first VSCP assignment. While there, she was able to attend many presentations and even got to do a behind-the-scenes tour of the Houston Zoo!

"When I was little, I wanted to be a veterinarian. Once I started learning more about marine biology and zoology, now my goal is to become an Aquatic Veterinarian. It is a combination of the areas I love to learn about most, marine zoology and veterinary science. I was excited when my mom found the VSCP program. I am able to work on becoming a veterinary assistant in high school. VSCP is helping me to get more hands-on experience with animals now instead of having to wait until veterinary school to do that. What I am learning in the VSCP modules and hands on activities will be helpful to me in college and at vet school."

We are amazed with how much Addison has accomplished at such a young age and we can't wait to see what the future has in store for her!
