Texas Music Legend Tommy Alverson Passes Away, Leaving Behind a Legacy of Love and Music
Tommy Alverson, a beloved icon in the Texas music scene, passed away on Thursday, November 14, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family in his final moments. His wife shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, quoting the lyrics, “Just like the lucky ol’ sun, he’s got nothing to do but roll around Heaven all day.”
Just weeks earlier, over 1,200 friends, fans, and fellow musicians gathered at Billy Bob’s Texas for The Gathering for Tommy Alverson, an event that raised thousands of dollars to support him during his fight. The family was deeply moved by the overwhelming outpouring of love and support.
Throughout his career, Alverson shared the stage with some of Texas music’s most legendary figures, including Willie Nelson, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and Jerry Jeff Walker, among others.
In a moving tribute to their friend and hero, Deryl Dodd and 14 other artists came together to write and record a song honoring Tommy Alverson called "When Tommy Comes to Town." The track, which incorporates lines and titles from some of Tommy’s most iconic songs and salutes his legacy. Download the song HERE. All proceeds will go directly to the Alverson family.
Artist Mike Mancy posted on Facebook, "Thank you to the artists/musicians/radio stations, etc, who helped make this possible! Especially thank you to Tommy Alverson! Without your music this song couldn't be made. We love you!"
