It's Willie Wednesday!

Our Texas Hero, Willie Nelson has been one of the main figures of the outlaw country genre that started brewing in the late 1960s as a reaction to the restrictions of the Nashville sound. He is the Godfather of what we now know as Texas Music.

Willie Nelson’s 76th Studio Album Last Leaf On The Tree Will Be Released Nov. 1st

Our Texas Hero, Willie Nelson (91) will release his 76th studio album with son Micah Nelson called Last Leaf on the Tree out November 1st

Micah, a.k.a. Particle Kid helped produce and performed on the legendary singer’s album that includes covers and songs written or co-written by Willie.

One of the covers on the album is Tom Waits song “Last Leaf” and can be heard HERE. Other covers include versions of hits by artists such as Keith Richards, The Flaming Life, Warren Zevon and more.

"There are little side-quests, but that became the through-line -- facing death with grace," Micah Nelson said in a statement, according to the outlet.

The 34-year-old also said in a statement to Saving Country Music that he took a "sculptor's approach" to helping produce the album.

"It's an approach that I really love and have used a lot over the years -- just throwing the clay down and stepping back, then maybe adding a little more, and then maybe shaving down here, and kind of building the tracks that way," he said.

It’s in the Genes

In addition to Willie Nelson’s son Micah a.k.a. Particle Kid performing with his dad, Willie’s other son Lukas Nelson has spent a lot of time on the road with him performing on the Outlaw Music Festival tour recently. The two are very much like one another as can be seen in a TikTok video showing both doing separate solo performances almost 40 years apart of “Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground.” Willie’s performance was filmed at a 1984 concert and the performance of Lukas was filmed in 2023. In fact, the two sound very similar to one another especially when Lukas covers his dad’s songs. However, Lukas has his own style that has gained him much acclaim from radio and critics especially with his most recent album Sticks and Stones featuring the hit single with Lainey Wilson “More Than Friends” and other chart-topping singles.

Lukas also wowed fans with his cover of Eric Clapton’s “Before You Accuse Me”. Lukas said in recently surfaced video footage that his father was the first to inspire him as a musician and he got into blues, notably Eric Clapton’s music.

“I got to meet him [Clapton] one time,” Nelson said in the clip. “And I was so inspired and scared, I didn’t know what to say. I just ran and I gave him a hug, I must have been 10 years old and I think he had a cold, but he hugged me back. And right around that time he came out with his record, it’s an ‘Unplugged’ record he did. So thought that this would be a good one.” Per Em Casalena American Songwriter article.

“Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground” was written by Willie and released on the number one Billboard soundtrack Honeysuckle Rose in 1980. It was his seventh number one single on the country charts. And no one can forget the most famous song from this soundtrack, “On The Road Again” that was also a number one single.
