The Texas Heartbeat Act
A Visceral Reaction from the LeftA
|
|
Greetings and Shalom!
After the Texas Heartbeat Act was signed by Governor Abbott and became a state law, there has been a visceral reaction from pro-abortion rabbis who oppose the law and any limits on abortion. In my latest article, "Rabbis Denounce the Texas Heartbeat Act," I respond to two pro-abortion rabbis who falsely claim that the Heartbeat Act violates the Jewish faith.
One of the most egregious and outrageous responses came from Rabbi Eichanan Poupko and is a Featured Post on his Times of Israel blog. Rabbi Poupko writes:
"This ban is not really a pro-life stance; rather, it is forcing fundamentalist Christian beliefs on the many who do not share those beliefs."
"Texas’s brutal new anti-abortion laws and bounties on those who help facilitate them are a reminder of why Orthodox alliances with Christian groups are not always in the best interest of the Jewish community."
First, the assault is not on Orthodox Judaism, but on unborn children who deserve a right to life and whose voices are silenced. Rabbi Poupko calls the Heartbeat Act "brutal." It is brutal to kill unborn children up to birth by dismembering them and using their body parts for experimentation.
Second, by attacking Christian beliefs, Rabbi Poupko risks stoking anti-Semitism from Christians who are our friends, share our values and are pro-Israel.
Third, his article is filled with errors. Rabbi Poupko claims that Christian doctors are pro-life for unborn babies but have no problem "pulling a fully grown live human being off of life-support." False. I have been involved in pro-life movement for decades. Christian pro-life doctors, lawyers and organizations are opposed to euthanasia, support end-of-life care and would never support "pulling someone off life support." Numerous Christian organizations fought on behalf of saving Terri Schiavo, and others like her.

Fourth, he claims most abortions are NOT done for choice. Definitely a HUGE FALSE. Of the 63 million abortions committed in the United States since 1973, almost all are for choice, with less than 1% for rape, incest and the mother's life.
Fifth, Rabbi Poupko mistakenly writes that there is a "criminal" charge against both the woman and the abortionist. Wrong. Only civil charges can be filed in the Texas Heartbeat Law, and only against the abortionist - not the woman.
Perhaps Rabbi Poupko should read the law before writing about it.
Finally, the article is poorly written with a typo, poor grammar and syntax and run-on sentences. I'm surprised it's a Featured Post, but there you have it.
Radical pro-abortion rabbis and secular Jewish organizations are doing Judaism a terrible disservice by potentially damaging our relationships with those in the Christian and greater American community who are our friends. Wrong thing to do.

The Jewish population of Texas is 176,000 people, which makes up only 0.06% of the population of the entire state. The World Population Review reports that "in terms of religious preferences among the current residents of the state, 77% are affiliated with a Christian based faith."
If anything, it is the secular Jewish groups who are infringing on the rights of Christians that make up the majority of the Texas citizenry to practice their faith and determine what the laws should be.
Leftist Jewish leaders extract passages from texts and distort their true meaning. My article was published in my JLL Blog, and on my Times of Israel Blog page.
Also, don't miss my article, "Texas Heartbeat Act: No small feet for little feet."
In the next section, I have the authentic Jewish pro-life response.

Pro-Life Rabbis Defend the
Texas Heartbeat Act

While liberal Jewish groups promote the false notion that killing unborn children is condoned in Judaism, there is another voice and another message that goes unheard. Orthodox rabbis and religious leaders explain that Jewish belief is pro-life.
Rabbi Avrohom Gordimer is Chairman of the Rabbinic Circle at Coalition for Jewish Values. Rabbi Gordimer responds with an outstanding explanation of the authentic Jewish position on abortion. In his article, "Sorry, liberal Jewish leaders - Judaism is not pro-abortion," Rabbi Gordimer writes:
"If these self-declared Jewish leaders would be honest in their purported concern for compliance with the Torah, they would reject Roe v. Wade and would instead hail the Texas law as being closer to fulfilling the Jewish mandate."

Syndicated columnist Don Feder is a long time supporter of pro-life causes. In this recent article, he defends the Texas Heartbeat Act and reveals the hypocrisy of the "pro-choice" movement:

Is Modern Medicine Stripping Us of Our Humanity?
|
In The Epoch Times, columnist Paul Adams discusses Charles Camosy's latest book, "Losing Our Dignity," and how modern bio-ethicists have secularized medicine creating a culture that devalues the dignity of life. Mr. Adams quotes from my essay about the case involving disabled British toddler Alta Fixsler.

The Most Dangerous Abortion Bill In History Passes the House
|
|
Here are articles on the latest news regarding the so-called "Women's Health Protection Act," (WHPA) which has nothing to do with health and protects no one. It is the most dangerous abortion bill ever passed in the House, and dismantles every reasonable abortion restriction in the Roe v. Wade decision.
I wrote a letter to my Congresswoman, Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-NY District 9) to oppose this horrific bill that kills babies and endangers women. Here is a copy of my letter. I received only an automated reply. She voted YES on the bill. I am afraid that New York is beyond hope. They want to kill these children.
